Job Purpose
The Substation / PTO Director’s primary role is to provide leadership for field operations. Working as one team, one National Grid, the director has an array of responsibilities that include assuring a safe work culture, driving performance, coaching, mentoring, and overall development of the field workforce.
- Overall general management responsibility and accountability for the operational and budget performance of all Substation / PTO groups in National Grid’s New England service territory.
- Manage Safety Performance to drive to zero injuries each day.
- Monitor / Manage company policies, procedures, standards, and labor agreements assigned to this area of responsibility.
- Uphold company values throughout the organization.
- Lead the organization by introducing new technologies that help with reliability / cost / operability of the system.
Key Accountabilities
- Manage and meet budgets for assigned areas of responsibility.
- Manage group performance for safety, quality, and efficiency, environmental and ethical compliance
- Knowledge of collective bargaining agreements, construction standards, work methods, safety requirement and environmental procedures.
- Ensure that maintenance programs are completed to regulatory and company standards, including required documentation using approved databases and applications.
- Develop and implement appropriate responses to all system conditions including equipment failures, outages and storms.
- Manage all field investigations of system disturbances and ensure that all follow-up actions are executed in an appropriate time frame.
- Review plans and make recommendations and/or propose operational limitations to ensure the integrity of the electric power system.
- Provide technical support to Divisions and System Control Centers.
- Recruitment of future workers, development of group for the future
- Apply creative problem-solving skills in a team environment.
- Recognize equipment failure trends and respond with strategic plan to correct.
- Recognize industry trends and how they would apply to the area of accountability.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience from 10 - 15 years within the High Voltage industry including five years of concentration in substation maintenance and construction.
- Demonstrated commitment to Safety of the workforce.
- Possesses working knowledge of electrical equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, switches, instrument transformers, metering equipment, voltage regulation, protection relaying, and power quality; OSHA standards, National Grid safety rules, Substation Maintenance Procedures, Electric Operating Procedures, and best practice work methods.
- Thorough knowledge of substation equipment and their application.
- Working knowledge of substation switching / switching orders / switching procedures.
