OPTIONAL:
Applicants hired into this position who are not currently VA state government employees are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus upon hire with signature of a 12-month agreement.

Applicants hired into this position who are currently working for VA state government are eligible for a $5,000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with signature of an agreement for an additional 12-months of service.

Classified Applicants hired into this position who are already working in VSP’s Firearms Transaction Center (Dept 041000), or Dispatcher function are not eligible for either a sign-on bonus upon hire or a retention bonus after 10 months.

About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Administrative Procedures Specialist in our Criminal Justice Information Services Division at our Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The successful candidate will support the commitment of the Virginia Department of State Police as Point of Contact (POC) to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) by enhancing outreach activities that improve the accessibility of the instant check program for firearm dealers and the gun buying population, and providing training and instructional information to assist, monitor, and enforce firearm dealer compliance with NICS requirements and Virginia firearm laws; conduct background checks prior to the purchase of a firearm in the Firearms Transaction Center while physically at Gun Show event locations; analyze criminal records and other documents to determine if there are prohibiting factors that prevent potential gun buyers or other recipients of firearms from lawfully purchasing or possessing firearms; maintain and report statistical information relating to area of responsibility; maintain Gun Show Calendar of Events; monitor receipt and implement dissemination of gun show notification forms and vendor lists; and determine and report non-compliance by gun show promoters of statutory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

•Knowledge of the general rules and regulations relevant to the review, collection, and protection of public and private information and databases.
•Skill in using Microsoft Office applications to include Word, Excel, Exchange/Outlook, basic computer operations, and web-based applications.
•Demonstrated ability to collect, interpret, summarize, and communicate information orally and in writing in English; to communicate effectively and apply excellent interpersonal skills; to retrieve automated records and use web-based data collection systems to extract and manipulate data; to apply research, analyze, and interpret a wide variety of information used to verify the validity and reliability of data and to reach sound judgements; to accurately maintain a variety of files, logs, and office records; to perform and organize work independently; to multitask and adapt to fast paced and varying work environments; to remain professional and operate effectively in high stress situations; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, consumer agencies, government agencies, law enforcement, legal representatives, and the general public; and to travel, occasionally overnight.
•Valid Virginia operator’s license required or ability to obtain prior to hiring and good driving record required.
