This advanced technical skills course will provide students with the skills necessary to manage high ropes courses/canopy tours and ziplines in instructional and commercial environments. Focuses on the development of technical skills and judgment associated with facilitating/guiding clients at height. Topics include equipment management, traditional and advanced belay techniques, self-belayed climbing, gear rescues, and risk management. This course is designed to be sequenced with RMP 614, Group Facilitation and Leadership as it builds and expands on skills developed in this course. Instructor will maintain current industry specific certifications and will have demonstrated depth of knowledge and skills at the train-the-trainer level. The course occurs at The UNH Browne Center, and instructor will ideally have a current skills verification at The Browne Center.

Duties/Responsibilities

Course Preparation (20%)

  • Develop syllabus for 2-credit, ½ semester course.

  • Plan and design interactive and experiential class sessions to provide students with both technical instruction as well as hands-on practice.

Course Delivery and Interaction with Students (60%)

  • Instruct students in the effective management of risks for participants at height.

  • Facilitate learning process for students, meeting their educational needs.

  • Interact with University students in a respectful and professional manner; modeling behaviors expected of professionals in the Challenge course and Aerial Adventure course field.

  • Respond to student questions in class as well as outside of class.

Grading (20%)

  • Timely feedback on course related evaluative materials – i.e. papers, quizzes and tests.

  • Provide constructive and developmentally appropriate feedback as part of student evaluation and grading process.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Current Experience Portfolio demonstrating numbers of days of Challenge Course/Aerial Adventure Course facilitation. Instructor will ideally have experience working at more than one facility, representing a variety of experiences and familiarity with different Local Operating Procedures (LOPs) – in addition to Industry standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Instructor will ideally have a 4-year Undergraduate Degree in a related field, such as UNH’s Recreation Management and Policy, Outdoor Leadership and Management option.

  • Current Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) PC Level II or equivalent certification or ability to acquire these certifications in time to deliver course.

  • Successfully pass Browne Center Staff Competency/Skills Verification.

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

Required Licenses & Certifications:

  • Current ACCT PC Level II or equivalent certification or ability to acquire these certifications in time to deliver course.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven experience delivering Challenge Course/Aerial Adventure Course/ Teambuilding programming.

  • Demonstrated ability to belay and instruct participants in belaying.

  • Risk Management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Microsoft Office suite

  • Familiarity with Canvas
