SUMMARY
Under general supervision, assists students, families and school staff in Spanish and English, at various sites across the district, depending on where assistance is most needed.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Assists students and families with educational programs and special assignments; performs duties within scope of authority and training, and in compliance with MPS policies, and the Standards of Effective Instructional Support for Educational Assistants; duties will vary according to job assignment.
  • Assists MPS staff to facilitate educational functions and other services to maintain a

safe and productive learning environment; works with students to reinforce academic learning and improve personal skills.

  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Provides customer service to parents and guardians, answers questions, and explains MPS rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Communicates with parents, students, and staff to convey pertinent information while maintaining confidentiality of personal information.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
  • Provides interpretation and translation to bridge language barriers between families and administrators, and continuously provides support to new EL students and their families.
  • Performs a variety of duties, including scheduling, planning, event and program logistics, classroom support, transportation coordinator, and emergency procedures.
  • Administers a variety of school programs, student services, community services, special assignments, and educational programs in support of MPS goals throughout the entire district; including but not limited to MPS program outreach, bilingual & hearing-impaired translator/interpreter, media & technology, student behavior support, community relations & accommodations, English Language Learning, vocational training, keeps records of student progress and activities and other special events.
  • Flexibility in switching MPS work sites to support students, families and staff, for up to two weeks at a time.
  • Will be required to work outside normal business hours and work some extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.
  • Must have their own means of transportation.
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis.

CLASS DESIGNATION

Bilingual – Spanish: Assist licensed staff as an interpreter to facilitate the provision of health, education, or other services to non-English speaking, limited English speaking and/or bilingual/bicultural community members.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

AA degree or completion of 90 quarter or 60 semester college credits (required) in Education, Child Development, Behavioral Sciences; or educational area related to position assignment; AND one (1) year of professional experience working with children; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
