About the role

Who we are

Why Rensselaer? Join Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's dynamic global community of changemaker including some of the world’s leading researchers, students, alumni, and faculty who ask the important questions and devise the scientific and technological innovations that make the world a better place for all of humanity.

Nestled on a beautiful 275-acre campus in upstate NY, Rensselaer is home to five schools, 32 research centers, three makerspaces, an observatory, one of the world’s fastest supercomputers, and an IBM Quantum One computer - the first university-based quantum computer in the U.S.

Rensselaer is the first and only university campus to host an IBM Quantum System One. ECSE is a major contributor to these efforts. Founded in 1824, RPI is the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world and celebrated its bicentennial in 2024. RPI is a private university located at the beautiful confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers in Troy, New York.

Under the visionary leadership of President Marty Schmidt and Provost Rebecca Doerge, RPI is poised for transformative growth and innovation. With RPI’s involvement, the City of Troy is undergoing buoyant commercial and cultural resurgence. Beyond Troy are the vibrant urban areas of the greater Capital Region, including Albany, Schenectady, and Saratoga—as well as the beautiful wilderness of the Adirondack region.

Established in 1907, Electrical Engineering at Rensselaer is one of the first in the country. ECSE alumni have contributed to the information and digital revolution by inventing the digital camera, the microprocessor, the graphics processor, power electronics, electronic mail, and more. ECSE awards B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer and Systems Engineering. The Department is highly interdisciplinary, with strong collaborations with other Rensselaer Engineering Departments and in other disciplines such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Cognitive Science. The Department has ~35 faculty, 700 undergraduates, and 120 graduate students. ECSE is one of the seven departments in the School of Engineering, which has approximately 160 faculty, 3000 undergraduates, and 700 graduate students.
