About the Role
At Degreed, some of the most complex technical challenges live at the intersection of data, integrations, and client success — and this role sits right there.
As a Database Solutions Development Engineer on our Customer Engineering team, you'll serve as a critical escalation point for the organization's technical problems. Your day-to-day will be built on two tracks: working through a diverse ticket queue that spans the full breadth of the Degreed platform, and owning larger-scale initiatives like data migrations, cleanups, and process automation.
You'll join a small, high-tenure team of database experts based across the US and Europe, working fully remotely across time zones. You'll be expected to own your work, identify where things can be improved, and proactively build the tools and processes that make the team more effective over time — with a high degree of independence, supported by a collaborative team and clear workflows.
Key Skills
- 4+ years of hands-on experience troubleshooting complex, highly technical client issues in a fast-paced environment.
- Expert-level SQL skills, including SQL Server — querying, stored procedures, functions, performance optimization, and understanding the downstream impact of actions.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to investigate, debug, and resolve data issues with precision and care.
- Clear, effective communication — able to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical clients and stakeholders.
- Comfort working with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code) to accelerate troubleshooting and script development.
- Experience with browser dev tools, tracing tools, and log file analysis.
- Genuine curiosity and drive — someone who approaches new problems with critical thinking and a solutions-first mindset.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with C# — particularly for reading code, identifying logic issues, and working with SSO class libraries.
- Hands-on experience with FTP, APIs, webhooks, ETL processes, and data formats (CSV, JSON, XML).
- Familiarity with logging and observability tools such as Datadog and Amplitude.
- Experience with Snowflake, Azure Data Factory, or similar cloud data platforms.
- Working knowledge of GoodData or similar reporting/analytics platforms.
- Understanding of SSO protocols and App-to-App integrations.
- Background in database administration — performance tuning, efficiency optimization, or data recovery.
- Familiarity with Elasticsearch.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate, troubleshoot, debug, and resolve the organization's technical issues, serving as an escalation point across the Customer Engineering and Support organizations.
- Partner closely with Support, Product, and Engineering teams to diagnose and resolve technical issues while maintaining a deep understanding of platform architecture and behavior.
- Build and maintain scripts to automate troubleshooting workflows using SQL, PowerShell, or equivalent scripting languages, reducing manual effort and improving resolution speed.
- Triage and resolve complex data issues, constructing detailed reports using SQL tables, queries, functions, and stored procedures.
- Develop and maintain expert-level knowledge of all Degreed platform features, configurations, APIs, integrations, jobs, and architecture — staying current as the product evolves.
- Handle client production data with extraordinary care, rigor, and awareness of data privacy standards and procedures.
- Communicate findings, root causes, and solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including clients and internal stakeholders.
