About the Staff DBRE Position:
Stord is looking for a Staff DBRE to join the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team. This role will focus on standardizing and implementing best practices across our software teams and databases. This person will build and own data pipelines, identify and implement database best practices, and work closely with our data and engineering teams to optimize and scale our data.
This is an opportunity to build the services and systems that will accelerate the development of Stord’s cloud products and features. The Staff DBRE will provide highly available, operationally elegant solutions that serve as a foundation for a growing product base and serving an unbounded audience. This is a high-impact role and you’ll be working with a variety of product engineering teams across the company.
What You'll Do:
- Design and maintain robust database solutions for PostgreSQL and Google BigQuery environments, ensuring data availability and system resilience
- Identify areas of improvement, and implement optimization of databases to ensure optimal performance and cost efficiency
- Drive and own data performance optimization, schema design, code review, SQL query tuning
- Develop self-service, automation tools to successfully enable product engineering to own database operations and reduce the need for direct database access
- Manage and scale distributed systems like Kafka for event streaming and ElasticSearch for search capabilities
- Oversee Redis implementations for caching and real-time data manipulation
- Employ comprehensive monitoring to track performance metrics and system health, using data to drive optimizations
- Collaborate with product engineering to integrate best practices in database usage into the broader architecture
- Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures, and definitions for the data dictionary
- Provide guidance and leadership in database strategy and operations, ensuring alignment with the company’s technological and business needs
- Influence the selection of appropriate database technologies based on product requirements and ensure high availability
- Recommend and coordinate upgrades for existing database systems and ensure disaster recovery
- Participate in on-call rotations, providing expert troubleshooting and incident resolution to maintain service levels and availability
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience in related technical field
- At least 7+ years of experience in database administration and reliability engineering with extensive knowledge of PostgreSQL, Google BigQuery, and other database technologies
- Strong background in developing and maintaining real-time and batch data pipelines
- Proven experience with Kafka, ElasticSearch and Redis
- Fluency in SQL, Python, Bash, or other scripting languages
- Expertise in automation and monitoring tools, with a strong understanding of infrastructure as code principles
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system problems
- Effective communication skills, capable of leading discussions and presenting technical details to a varied audience
- Experience with cloud services, preferably in a Google Cloud or AWS, Azure
