Job Summary

The Employment & Compliance Attorney is responsible for supporting HR and the global compliance program of Harley-Davidson, Inc. and its affiliates. This position will focus on: (1) providing day-to-day employment law advice on a variety of topics, including FMLA, ADA, discrimination, counseling, discipline, documentation, terminations, investigations, wage & hour, collective bargaining, compensation and other matters and (2) providing day-to-day advice and counsel on product regulatory compliance, environmental compliance, and trade compliance. With respect to compliance, this position will be responsible for providing support to various areas of the business, such as the Product Regulatory Affairs group, Trade Compliance, and Environmental Health & Safety. With respect to employment, this position will be responsible for monitoring relevant federal, state, and local legal developments, working with HR to remediate any non-compliant employment practices from recruitment through termination, review and approve severance agreements, and provide training to HR and business professionals as required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Administers the delivery of legal services in the identified practice areas and otherwise as needed.
  • Seeks continuous improvement opportunities within scope of responsibility.
  • Tracks legal trends and makes recommendations for continuous improvement as appropriate for Harley-Davidson.
  • Reviews, drafts, and revises policies, practices, procedures, communications, trainings, etc. in response to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares and delivers training regarding legal, regulatory, and corporate policy compliance.
  • Oversees outside legal counsel and manages existing labor and employment litigation and arbitration matters.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Required

Education Specifications

  • Requires a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Qualified candidates will be licensed to practice law in the United States, a member in good standing with a State bar, and the ability to become a member of the Wisconsin State bar.

Experience Requirements

 

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience.
  • Minimum of eight years of law firm or corporate legal department experience.
  • A high level of integrity, excellent judgment and analytical skills, and the ability to identify all relevant issues.
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills (including good listening skills).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with cross-functional stakeholders to implement compliance initiatives across the business.
  • The ability to lead and work well in a team environment.
  • Organization, planning and research skills.
  • An ability to provide sound legal advice that is responsive to the business needs of Harley-Davidson, Inc. and its subsidiaries as well as responds to clients’ needs consistent with corporate strategies and objectives.
  • An appreciation and awareness of the legal/business interface.
  • An ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and lead several projects in a dynamic and fast paced work environment.
