 About this job:
Direct all internal audit activities for Denver Public Schools and report operationally to the Chief of Finance with a dotted reporting line to the Board of Education Treasurer.  Responsible for performing compliance and operational audits to ensure that District assets are safeguarded and District funds are received and disbursed in accordance with District Policies and Procedures and applicable laws and regulations.

What You'll Do: 

• Prepare and administer the department budget.
• Responsible for selection, training, and supervision of the Audit staff.
• Determine departments or operations to be audited and the timing and frequency of audits.
• Coordinate audit activities with external auditors.
• Recommend changes in policies or procedures to increase efficiency of operations or to improve safeguards over District assets.
• Review audit results for excessive cost overruns, inefficiencies and fraud. Ascertain that District assets are properly utilized and report exceptions to the Administration.
• Conduct special audits as requested by the Administration.
• Demonstrate cost consciousness and operational efficiency while performing the duties of this position.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 What You’ll Need: 

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is required. 
• Master’s Degree is preferred. 
• Five (5) years experience as an auditor, preferably in a school environment.
• Three (3) years prior supervisory experience. 
• Current CPA certificate is required.
• Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
• Strong organizational and analytic skills and strong attention to detail.
• Self-starter/leader who can anticipate department needs in a proactive (versus, reactive) manner.
• Ability to develop and interpret data and manage resources.
• Ability to motivate and influence others.
• Ability to effectively lead a team.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Ability to multi-task and juggle management of several high-priority projects in parallel.
• High degree of integrity in handling confidential information.
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to lead a high-performing team.
• Advanced proficiency with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office products (e.g., Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and statistical software, preferred.
• Knowledge of generally accepted accounting and auditing practices (GAAP), preferred.
• Knowledge of governmental regulations and District internal auditing policies, preferred.
• Ability to manage effectively within the hierarchy of a school district, preferred.
• Ability to supervise departmental staff, preferred.
• Ability to analyze, identify and problem-solve in highly complex situations, preferred.
• Ability to coordinate and work effectively with diverse staff, preferred.
• Ability to work in a team oriented environment, preferred.
• Ability to communicate persuasively and diplomatically, preferred.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills in English, preferred.
