Hubbell’s Pulsed Power Laboratory in Wadsworth, Ohio focuses on AC and high-current (up to 100kA) impulse testing of ZnO varistors, which are semiconductor surge protection devices with very nonlinear V-I curves. The summer intern will work closely alongside the laboratory engineering staff in support of initiatives intended to expand the capabilities and knowledge base of the lab. They will apply mathematical tools (e.g. Fourier analysis) and hands-on skills to analyze experimental setups and data, especially with the goal of decreasing uncertainty of numerical data.
Pay Rate: $20.00 - $26.00 per hour (based on education status - freshman, sophomore, etc.)
A Day In The Life
- Develop a deep understanding of the underlying physics of the various generators and products in the laboratory
- Run experiments safely and autonomously (switch hardware, calibrate system, verify setup, operate oscilloscopes, LabVIEW programs, and signal generators, etc.)
- Identify sources of uncertainty in experiments, documenting thought process/debug method and finally creating root cause analysis reports
- Provide technical support to other members of assigned department
- Participate in various non-testing activities such as maintenance, calibration, training, lab organization, safety projects, etc. as assigned by supervisor
- Must be a self-starter with strong drive, initiative, and ability to work with limited management input
What will help you thrive in this role?
Required Skills and Experience:
- Currently enrolled in a four-year degree program in a STEM field
- Demonstrable understanding of electrical circuits concepts (Ohm’s Law, Kirchoff’s Laws, RC and RL circuits, transformers, phasors, etc.)
- Interest, curiosity, and passion in/for any of the following fields: electricity and magnetism, high voltage testing, power generation and distribution, automation, product testing, and/or semiconductor physics
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with LabVIEW
- Experience with Allen Bradley PLC programming
- Familiarity with oscilloscope theory and operation
- Knowledge of Fourier transforms/signal analysis
- Proficiency in theoretical solid-state physics
- Machining experience
Education
Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering General
