About the role

NMI is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Compliance with a forward-looking perspective on the payments industry to join our team. As the Director, you will play a crucial role in shaping our risk management strategies and ensuring compliance of our payment operations.

This role is the first line of defense and support for our business operations and execution of policies and procedures that mitigate various types of risk at NMI.

  • Promote a culture of risk and compliance awareness throughout the company by creating and supporting the development of training and education on risk policies, practices, and industry guidelines.
  • Work with the extended leadership team to assess the risk of key initiatives, and ensure our business practices, including underwriting activities are operating in compliance with the relevant payments related regulations.
  • Have a deep understanding of risk assessment, regulatory frameworks, and emerging trends in the payments landscape.
  • Be instrumental in safeguarding our financial transactions and maintaining our reputation as a trusted payments company.

Responsibilities:

  • Creating and maintaining a strong compliance program, including policies relating to the Anti-Money Laundering Act, underwriting policies, payment network policies and payments related regulations.
  • Coordinate risk and compliance activities and initiatives with enterprise-wide stakeholders including business managers, Legal, and Finance.
  • Serve as a credible business partner across functions, providing advice and support as needed
  • Manage and regularly collaborate with our underwriting team and help drive the evaluation and enhancement of fraud detection and prevention mechanisms, consistent with industry regulatory body guidelines..
  • Monitor regulatory changes and ensure the institutions adherence to evolving payment related laws and regulations
  • Provide strategic guidance to senior leadership on risk exposure, mitigation strategies and the impact of emerging payment methods on our risk landscape
  • Design, implement, and/or influence internal governance processes. Manage governance throughout the organization to ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Review current policies and procedures to identify process gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Create and lead internal audit programs designed to mitigate payment risk losses and regulatory compliance risk with appropriate regulatory bodies.
  • Lead and direct external audit reviews with sponsor banks, processors, or networks
  • Provide consulting support and proactive evaluation for business management, e.g. with respect to regulatory and industry changes, ensuring effective controls are in place to address risks, leading, guiding or participating on key projects and initiatives to address new or changed business capabilities.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of Regulatory Compliance, Risk Management, or similar experience in a financial services organization including 5 or more years’ experience in a Payments company Experience in managing compliance, risk, and underwriting programs for payment acceptance .
  • Ability to multitask effortlessly and manage competing priorities under demanding deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, manage projects and drive/achieve results.
  • Proven ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, JD Preferred
  • Visionary mindset with the ability to anticipate industry shifts and their impact on risk exposure
  • Understanding of a financial organization’s payments network, fraud, AML and security controls
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of regulatory and legislative guidelines
