The Managing Executive – Global Strategy reports to and works with Markel’s President and COO, Insurance Operations in order to:

Responsibilities:

• Direct and manage the Global Strategy team.
• Develop the specific business plans that will drive the two main trading divisions (US Specialty and MINT) to their 10-5-1 goal.
• Develop global capabilities across the divisions, such as leadership in distribution, organization development (alongside HR), and operational effectiveness.
• Support the Global Shared Service organisations in developing and implementing their plans to improve operations.
• Drive the strategic delivery unit to ensure high profile projects are delivered on time and budget.
• Assessment of potential M&A targets.
• Runs the weekly meetings of the President’s Strategy Group (PSG).
• Own the internal alignment of Global Strategy with other areas of the company, such as HR, IT, Finance, Legal, etc.

 

 

 Capabilities/Requirements:

• Deep knowledge of the global specialty insurance marketplace, preferably having worked in front line operations.
• Strong strategic and visionary mindset with the ability to think creatively.
• Proven ability to ‘make change happen’ in a large global organisation.
• Exceptional people manager, especially in the context of an organisation containing a number of high potential and ambitious individuals.
• Extensive experience leading teams with demonstrated strong leadership capability
• Executive presence and ability to engage with senior leaders in a collaborative manner and build trusted relationships
• Experience designing, standing up and leading complex high visibility initiatives and programs on both growth strategy and efficiency areas
• Big picture thinker with ability to influence at all levels
• Experience building business cases and leveraging data and quantitative analysis to drive decision making

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national base salary range for the Chief Strategy Officer position is $275k - $360k/year.
