Associate Program Director of Internal Medicine Residency Program - Physician - Valley Health - Ridgewood, NJ

Valley Health System (VHS) in affiliation with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) is actively recruiting an Associate Program Director for the newly accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program.

This position presents the opportunity to collaborate with the Program Director and the GME team to design, develop and operate a new training program to begin in July 2024. The incumbent will also be the clinic director for the IM continuity clinic.  In addition to excellent clinical and leadership skills, the ideal candidate will have a proven track record of academic excellence and be knowledgeable of ACGME policies and procedures. At least 30 percent effort will be dedicated to the Associate Program Director role and Clinic Director who is expected to be clinically active in the outpatient setting

GME RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Responsibilities: 
   1. EDUCATIONAL
      1. Assists the PD and APD/DAC to develop and execute a successful Residency Program Curriculum (the APD may chair the Program’s Curriculum Committee) and/or Clinical Competency Committee (CCC).
      2.  Assist other faculty (such as Section Chiefs) with development of rotation specific goals and objectives for the Program Curriculum.
      3. Assists the APD/DAC in the educational and administrative
         tasks related to the Outpatient Center.
      4. Collaboratively implements structural and educational changes to the program to address identified areas for improvement in the Program Curriculum.
      5. Aids residents in developing ideas and facilitate connections with mentors for required scholarly project(s) (includes quality improvement, case reports, abstracts, and peer review research).
      6. Tracks resident scholarship and serves as a mentor to them regarding their future scholarly goals/fellowship applications.
      7. Actively Participates with house staff in scholarly activities, national and local conferences, poster presentations and performance improvement projects.
      8. May be assigned to plan, schedule and oversee Ambulatory Morning Conferences.
      9. Actively participate in weekly Board Review Course. Act as board review mentor to an equal proportion of residents as the other faculty members.
      10. Supervise, teach and precept Residents and Students in the Outpatient Center.
      11. May be assigned to coordinate and schedule Faculty Development lecture series quarterly in collaboration with the PD
      12. Assist the PD and Chair of the Curriculum Committee develop and execute a successful IM Residency Program Curriculum (Currently one of the APD's chairs the Program's Curriculum Committee).
   2. EVALUATION:
      1. Actively participate on the Clinical Competency Committee that oversees the development and maintains a system of milestone and competency-based evaluations. May chair the Committee.
      2. Member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).
   3.  RECRUITMENT:
      1. Reviews all assigned student applications including Dean’s Letters and letters of recommendation.
      2.  Actively participates in interviewing candidates
      3. Actively participates in the final Match list of applicants
   4.  MENTORING:
      1. Responsible for mentoring residents in planning, performing and presenting clinical research
      2. Responsible for mentoring a number of residents equivalent to other full time faculty members for their preparation to take the ABIM Certifying Examination
      3. Responsible for mentoring residents for career planning and/or fellowship applications
      4. Assist PD, APD's, CR and PA in facilitating a mentoring system and a wellness program for residents.
   5.  ADMINISTRATION OF THE INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM:
      1.  Participate in all Program Committees (may chair any of these except GMEC
      2. Assist the PD and the APD/DAC to continuously re-evaluate anticipated educational needs of residents as ACGME requirements change and as Internal Medicine in response to evolution in practice patterns.
      3. Ensure residents are meeting programmatic and Residency Review Committee requirements to be eligible to sit for the board examination upon
         residency completion.
      4. Attend Association of Program Directors Annual Meetings at the Program
         Directors discretion to ensure that the residency program is up-to-date with new requirements.
      5. Meet at least weekly with the PD, CR, PA and PD/DAC to discuss Program issues. These include resident performance, safety issues, duty hours, stress and conflicts, problem solving and resident and attending performance reviews.
