Job Summary:

The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position is responsible for on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks. This role involves job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and various types of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Jobsite Protection: Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, ensuring error-free execution and adherence to rules. This includes radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
  • Daily Briefings: Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure compliance with the safety requirements of the railroad.
  • Documentation: Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set-up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports.
  • Equipment Handling: Handle and place signs, derails, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, as needed throughout the day.
  • Safety Training: Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
  • Communication: Maintain high-level communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
  • Travel & Schedule Expectations:
  • Candidate should be prepared for extended periods away from home, potentially lasting several months.
  • Extended in field training on weekends may be required.
  • Must be willing to occasionally travel outside of the assigned territory as needed.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to meet required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
  • Ability to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
  • Understanding of On-Track Safety training and qualifications required for protected roadway workers.
  • Proficiency in radio communication procedures between RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge) and assigned work group.
