Overview

Full-Time student of a specialized internal training program.

 

A Scrub Assistant Trainee participates in the 6-month formal education program to train for the role of a surgical technologist in the Operating Room (OR) or Surgery environment. The program prepares students to assist with operations in the operating room, under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, surgical assistants, or other surgical personnel.  The Surgical Tech role helps set up the operating room, maintain an aseptic environment, prepare and transport patients for surgery, adjust lights and equipment, pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon’s assistants, hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Complete all course assignments as instructed and maintaining an 80 average
  • Attend class regularly as outlined in student handbook
  • Follows schools policies outlined in student handbook.
  • Prepares equipment and supplies for use in the procedure. Determine room is in readiness and OR suite is stocked for case.
  • Scrubs, gowns and gloves self and other team members for the procedures, prepares sterile tables and instruments, utilizing proper aseptic technique.
  • Prepares instruments and supplies on sterile field in a timely manner. Passes instruments accurately during case.
  • Counts sponges, needles and instruments with RN Circulator according to established procedures and labels all solutions/medications as they are added to the sterile field.
  • Handles instruments and supplies correctly and ensures their proper functioning.  
  • Collects and maintains specimens, and assures proper identification by the staff nurse.
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and request additional items from RN Circulator in sufficient time for surgical teams use.   
  • Utilizes physician preference cards in preparing for specific operative procedures and updates after each case.
  • Utilizes principles of universal precautions during surgical procedures.
  •  Assist with between case clean-up and proceed with preparation for the next case, restocks supplies and equipment after surgical procedures.
  • Performs second assistant duties as outlined by Huntsville Hospital policy.
  • Performs instrument reprocessing and sterilization procedures.
    • Identifies instruments and places in instrument sets completely.
    • Operates sterilizers.
    • Maintains sterilization records through documentation of the sterilization process.
    • Reports problems with sterilization immediately to the O.R. Charge Nurse.
    • Performs Attest (biological test) appropriately.
    • Operates Steris System properly and documents process.
  • Demonstrates accountability by staying informed of current changes in practice, new equipment, and quality initiatives.
    • Attends/completes all required in-services.
  • Qualifications

    Education: High School Diploma/GED; College Experience Preferred; Medical Terminology Preferred

    HH Employee: No Written Warning/Suspension Within the Year

    Experience:  None

    Additional Skills/Abilities:  BLS required prior to clinical rotation.

    Must possess excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast paced environment requiring prioritizing and flexibility with changing tasks frequently and quickly.
