This is an open position based at Harrison Power Station with, Mon Power, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [MP]
Job Summary
Operates and checks the operation of the sludge and lime handling equipment and coordinates the sludge disposal, lime and FGD systems operation according to the needs of the main plant.
Responsibilities include:
- Operates, starts, stops and adjusts under flow pumps.
- Operates, starts, stops and adjusts centrifuge feed booster pumps.
- Operates valves to the sludge and water flows.
- Operates valves to clean sludge lines.
- Operates, starts, stops and adjusts sludge disposal building auxiliaries including heating, ventilating, and air conditioning.
- Operates the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment and system.
- Take over, by manual control, the operation of equipment and flows in case of failure or faulty operation of automatic controls.
- Makes routine inspections and checks the operation of various alarms in sludge, lime handling, and FGD process equipment.
- Makes periodic inspections and lubricates auxiliary equipment; checks operation, bearings, packing glands and water seals; controls water supply to water cooled bearings and water seals; observes and records pressure, temperature, sludge, lime and water flows; monitors vibrations on rotating equipment.
- Performs switching as needed; placing and removing clearance tags.
- Understands Clearance Control Procedure, serves as Authorized Person and / or Switchman.
- Observes and records flows, densities, temperatures, bus voltage and auxiliary power use.
- Makes minor adjustments and repairs to equipment.
- Maintains proper levels in the mix tanks, flush water tanks, lime retention tanks and process tanks.
- Operates and maintains sumps.
- Observes the various instruments and gauges on the control panel for abnormal conditions and reports to the main control room of the conditions requiring attention.
- Works with and directs other employees in the operation and maintenance of equipment at the waste disposal site, lime handling equipment, the sludge line sumps, slaking lime and lime grits handling.
- Consults with the main plant operations and Supervisor as needed for close coordination of equipment operation.
- While on Duty, maintains an accurate log, communicates using phonetic alphabet and three-part communication.
- Performing control panel switching operations for regular and emergency operation of the plant, including safety blocking, tagging out and protecting against backfeed; instructing other operators or other employees in connection with tagging out, grounding and clearing plant electrical circuits and equipment and operating of disconnects; clearing with and obtaining instructions and orders from the Control Room Operator or other designated persons; restoring service to normal after receiving proper releases.
- Checking with employee whom he/she relieves for special orders, abnormal conditions and to obtain all pertinent information on operating conditions; examining log sheets to check operation, condition of equipment and to obtain information and instructions.
- Perform moderate operating maintenance when operating equipment; assist in and performs maintenance, repair, cleaning and overhaul work on plant and plant equipment when not performing operating duties.
- Collects samples, operates test instruments, performs routine analysis and tests associated with plant process and records results and reports irregularities.
- Performing other duties as assigned and qualified for.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Experience operating flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems and equipment and/or waste disposal, including sludge, systems and equipment at a fossil generation station is preferred.
- Must have at least a two-year technical degree in a related field (Power Plant Technology, Energy Systems) from an accredited school or the equivalent in education, training and experience.
- Equivalencies include:
- Three years related experience in a power producing utility or other process-related industries, including, but not limited to: paper mill industry, chemical, petro-chemical industries
- Military experience, in any branch of the United States Armed Services, applicable to power generation, large-scale treatment systems
- Must have passed the Edison Electric Institute POSS B/MASS test
- Must have demonstrated performance in the operation of equipment under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions.
