Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Program Manager, planning and implementing sports-related youth activities based upon youth needs and interests.  Primary focus will be to actively engage youth through various activities as an outlet through the implementation of sports, cooperative games, and fitness as a model for healthy youth lifestyles.  All recreation staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Conduct sport camps and training sessions for youth athletes.
• Maintain records of all after school students, meal plans, and activities.
• Establish productive relationships with other Tribes for the purpose of hosting sporting tournaments.
• Maintain active participation in youth sporting events (i.e. coach, referee, volunteer) as needed.
• Ensure all sports and activities are conducted according to safety guidelines and are age-appropriate.
• Provide direct supervision of youth.
• Monitor and log use of facility and recreation areas.
• Enforce facility rules and utilize conflict resolution strategies when needed.
• Interact with and establish healthy relationships with youth.
• Ensure that the facility, equipment, and sport fields are well maintained and secure at all times.
• Coordinate set-up, storage, and tear-down of equipment.
• Maintain building policies & procedures as they relate to scheduled events/activities.
• Coordinate with Recreation team to achieve optimal usage of resources.
• Maintain a quarterly calendar of events with tribal community and other departments to avoid the scheduling of conflicting events.
• Create and disseminate program information to community youth and families.
• Research grant opportunities and work with Grants Department to obtain additional funding.
• Provide monthly activity reports in accordance with program policies and procedures.
• Serve as a positive role model for all youth.
• Type and reproduce reports, forms, correspondence, checks, grants, and other material as generated by agency staff.
• Perform clerical and secretarial duties for Program Manager.
• Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
• Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts: 

• Contact with employees within the organization and members of the community (youth and families).
• Contact includes external agencies, schools, youth facilities, jails, and other tribal communities. Contact with SCIT Public Health to implement activities which may potentially reduce the risk of diabetes and obesity.
• Contact with SCIT 7th Gen and Ziibiwing to infuse cultural aspects into planned activities. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Two years’ experience working with youth and recreational related activities, or six (6) months direct work experience within department.
• Experience with planning and implementation of youth programming and sporting events.
• Experience with local school programming, requirements and policies.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights, holidays and weekends.
• Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position. 

 

Desired Qualifications: 

• Experience working with Native communities. 

 

License, Certification, or Special Requirements: 

• CPR and First Aid Certification within three months of hire.
