Manager, Immunology Flow Cytometry

The Role:
Moderna is seeking a talented and motivated cytometrist to manage a highly dynamic flow cytometry unit to support discovery and translational research across multiple therapeutic areas to facilitate the advancement of Moderna’s mRNA technology platform. This position is based at the Moderna Cambridge site and will be reporting to the Associate Director of Cellular Immunology research within the Department of Infectious Diseases. The applicant’s primary role will be to implement cytometry infrastructure and governance, user-training and consulting, instrument quality control, panel development, and assay execution with analysis of preclinical and clinical samples. The individual in this role will investigate immune-related molecular and cellular mechanisms of vaccines. S/he should be passionate about flow cytometry and possess substantial hands-on experience in best practices, assay troubleshooting, and will have the ability to work in a highly collaborative, dynamic, and interdisciplinary environment.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Strong flow cytometry focus, including multi-color panel development, experimentation and analyses, and equipment/reagent quality-control tracking
Cell sorting for downstream applications, including immune cell profiling and antibody discovery
Function as in-house cytometry expert and equipment manager, building productive relationships and supporting users across multiple teams/departments on experimental designs and applications to meet program/project goals and objectives
Support discovery-based research with scientific engagement from internal and external partners to facilitate expansion of Moderna’s vaccine portfolio and platform technology. Technical duties include flow cytometry, cell sorting, cell culture, protein expression/characterization, chemical-conjugation, cell activation, differentiation, proliferation, and biomarker discovery assays
Communicate research impact to broad audiences and subject-matter experts in the form of written documents and oral presentations.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
Highly independent and motivated individual with PhD or BS and 5+ years experience with an outstanding background in cellular immunology research utilizing flow cytometry. Comprehensive understanding of functionally-relevant molecules for dissecting cellular heterogeneity in a wide variety of tissues and species is required.
In-depth experience in high-dimensional panel development, full-spectrum cytometry (Cytek Biosciences), and working knowledge across a broad array of cytometry technologies/analytics is highly desirable. Experience in single-cell multi-omics approaches and instrumentation, including 10x genomics technology and CITE-Seq is a plus. Experience in image flow cytometry, histo-cytometry, workflow automation, and/or computational analyses of large datasets is a plus.
Demonstrable experience in cell sorting is required.
Excellent communication and technical skills, and ability to work efficiently in a multicultural highly dynamic and matrixed environment
Experience with data analysis platforms such as FlowJo, OMIQ, Spectroflo, FACSDiva, unsupervised dimensionality reduction data visualization methods is highly desired.
Previous experience operating and/or leading high-performing, agile flow cytometry core facilities, include direct report management experience is highly desired.
