About the role
Job Responsibilities
- Daily review all in-patient and Emergency room self-pay patients for alternative health coverage programs such as Presumptive eligibility Medicaid coverage.
- Pre-screens uninsured and underinsured patients to identify potential financial assistance opportunities. Reviews and interprets complex information.
- Screen Self-pay patients and their family members to determine eligibility for Medicaid and other programs. Conducts relevant research. Assist in the completion of applications.
- Educate patients and guarantors about Riverview Health’s financial assistance program.
- Initiate the financial assistance process with patients that meet the qualifications according to hospital policy. Reviews all financial assistance applications and either approves or denies based on eligibility requirements.
- Assist patients completing applications for health coverage according to standards and provide unbiased and accurate information on Qualified Health Plans options to support patients in choosing the health plan that best fits for their needs.
- Provide patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility based on their insurance coverage or eligibility for government programs. Provide support to resolve questions.
- Discusses financial arrangements for newborn(s); informs guarantors of the timeframe for enrolling a newborn in coverage, provides any documentation or guidance for the guarantor to enroll their child prior to or after the anticipated delivery date, and communicates appropriate information to registration staff as needed.
- Monitors and maintains multiple work queues as instructed and assigned. Provides coverage for Customer Services phone duties as needed. Responsible and proactive to follow up.
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations, policies and procedures established for various government and other health coverage programs. Follows and apply hospital and department policy and procedures.
- Responsible to remain current in eligibility plans and available options for uninsured and underinsured patrons. Seek opportunities for self-development and participate in areas of process improvement.
- Assists with special projects as assigned by Director of Patient Financial Services or Supervisor of Customer Service, as needed. Ability to work independently to meet productivity goals set by management.

Education Requirements
- Minimum: High School Diploma or equivalent
- Preferred: Associates Degree
Experience Requirements
- Minimum: Two (2) years hospital billing, and prior experience working with the public.
- One (1) year of Financial counseling, eligibility screening, and/or Medicaid application processing experience strongly desired.
License/Certification Requirements
- Minimum: None
- Preferred: State Licensed Navigator
