Job Title: Sr Power and Controls Technician  

FLSA Status:  Exempt  

Department: Technical Service Group  

Reports to: Manager, Manager, Power - Control Services

GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE: 

The Senior Power and Controls Technician provides advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of power and control systems on Loram’s specialized fleet equipment. This role serves as a technical leader within the field team, resolving complex issues, supporting field projects, and mentoring junior technicians. The Senior Technician ensures high-quality service delivery, contributing to fleet reliability, operational efficiency, and the safety of personnel and equipment 

Advanced Technical Support 

  • Perform complex troubleshooting and repair of power and control systems, including motors, and control circuits. 

  • Serve as the technical escalation point for challenging field issues. 

  • Conduct root cause analysis to prevent repeat failures. 

Field Service & Customer Support 

  • Travel to remote sites for maintenance, repairs, and retrofits. 

  • Interface with operations teams to minimize downtime and communicate repair status. 

  • Deliver customer-focused service while upholding Loram safety and quality standards. 

Team Mentorship & Leadership 

  • Mentor and train junior technicians in troubleshooting and repair procedures. 

  • Support the Assistant Manager in coordinating daily work assignments. 

  • Provide feedback on technician performance and recommend training needs. 

Documentation & Continuous Improvement 

  • Accurately document service activities, parts used, and repair outcomes. 

  • Provide field feedback to engineering and leadership for product improvements. 

  • Contribute to service manuals, technical bulletins, and training content. 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: 

  • Technical certificate or post-secondary training in power and control, or related mechanical discipline. 

Experience: 

  • 5+ years troubleshooting and repairing power and control systems on mobile or industrial equipment. 

  • Experience mentoring or leading technicians in the field. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Advanced knowledge of hydraulic circuits, power and control components. 

  • Strong diagnostic skills with ability to resolve complex system failures. 

  • Proficiency with technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools. 

  • Strong communication and mentoring skills. 

  • Willingness to travel extensively (50–70%) and work in remote, variable environments. 

Preferred: 

  • Experience in rail, heavy equipment, or industrial fleet maintenance. 

  • Familiarity with electro-power systems and PLC-based controls. 

  • Exposure to condition-based monitoring or predictive maintenance systems. 

*6+ years combination of education and experience in power and control, or related mechanical discipline. 

PREEMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and role-specific assessments. Components may include DOT Physical Exam, Regulated (DOT) DS/BAT, Human Performance Evaluation (HPE), and Audiogram.
  • Position requires successful completion of an eVerifile/eRailSafe background check as required by Loram’s railroad customers. Ongoing eligibility is subject to compliance with eRailSafe standards.
  •  Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check will be conducted upon hire and annually thereafter in accordance with Loram’s Driving Policy.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
  • A Verification of post-secondary education.
  • Verification of current and prior relevant employment experience, to confirm the candidate meets the minimum required years of experience for the position.

Working Conditions 

  • Extensive travel (50–70%) to remote field sites across North America. 

  • Work outdoors in varying climates and operational environments. 

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs., regular exposure to power fluids, noise, and heavy equipment.
