Job Purpose

The Legal Counsel role at Flogas Britain is a forward-looking role supporting growth through new business and delivery of strategy through diversification into new energies and markets. In particular, this role will be placed within the growing legal and compliance function supporting Flogas Britain and a number of DCC portfolio companies in the UK, providing opportunities for extensive professional and personal progression and future opportunities within the DCC Group.  

This role will deliver legal and compliance support to help support the strong corecore business whilst shaping emerging business activity in the energy transition space. This role will provide exposure to a wide range of legal and compliance matters having a key focus on commercial contracts and providing practical and commercial advice to the business.

The ideal candidate will be a solicitor with 1 – 2 years post-qualification experience and a good grounding in commercial matters. Some in-house experience would be desirable (including via secondment) but is not required.

The legal and compliance function is embraced as an integral function within the business and the role-holder will be able to manage a busy workload, be used to working on multiple matters and projects concurrently and be able to communicate and present legal and commercial matters clearly and concisely to non-experts, and give clear, commercial advice.  They will also need to demonstrate an ability to communicate and build relationships with people at all levels of the organisation, together with external stakeholders, and be able to work well as part of a team. 

Flogas Britain is a fast-paced business and there is an expectation that the successful candidate will be able to work independently, although significant guidance will be given by the Legal Director and two other senior lawyers with further support and oversight from the DCC Group legal function as required.

Although the role is primarily to provide legal support to Flogas Britain, the expectation is for the successful candidate to also have the opportunity to be involved on occasion with the wider DCC group, including supporting the development and sharing of best practices. The role will work “hands-on” with business units across the entire organisation and is client-facing with the expectation that the individual will be confident in making decisions whilst considering the commercial impact.

The role will report to the Legal Director and be part of a small legal and compliance team at Flogas Britain, consisting of two other senior lawyers.  The Flogas Britain legal team is, in turn, part of the wider DCC Group legal function affording interaction with a wide range of international colleagues and experience of different projects and business models.
 

Accountabilities

The role by its nature is varied and wide-ranging, although is anticipated to cover as a minimum:

•    Work and support on a wide range of matters across different disciplines including;
o    Regulatory and compliance
o    Commercial contracts
o    Marketing and advertising
o    Consumer law
o    Data Protection
o    Disputes
o    Competition Law
o    Mergers and acquisitions/ corporate
•    Assist with the administration of the legal department;
•    Perform legal research;
•    Review, format, prepare and summarise legal or other documentation and contracts;
•    Handle standard legal enquiries into the department across all areas of the business with appropriate support and supervision;
•    Assist with the creation, roll-out and provision of training on legal and compliance matters to other departments across the business;
•    Assist with the management of legal claims including completion of court documentation where applicable.
•    Support the Customer Relations team in responding to escalated customer complaints. 
•    Building strong and lasting internal and external relationships within the business, including spending time in operational locations to understand the wider business, the challenges faced by it and the changes needed to progress
