About the role

About Foursquare

Foursquare is the leading independent location technology and data cloud platform, dedicated to building meaningful bridges between digital spaces and physical places. Our proprietary technology unlocks the most accurate, trustworthy location data in the world, empowering businesses to answer key questions, uncover hidden insights, improve customer experiences, and achieve better business outcomes. A pioneer of the geo-location space, Foursquare’s location tech stack is being utilized by our mobile apps CityGuide and Swarm, as well as the world’s largest enterprises and most recognizable brands, like Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, Spotify, Uber, Airbnb and others.

Foursquare’s flexible building blocks include technology to maximize marketing impact and drive incremental real-world engagement (Attribution, Audience, Proximity, SDK); data to deeply understand points of interest and real-world behavior patterns (Places and Visits), and tools to conduct advanced analysis, data enrichment, unification and visualization (Studio).

About the Position

Foursquare is looking for a Software Engineer to join our Developer Experience team!

The Developer Experience team authors and operates the tooling which enables our technical staff of programmers and data scientists to write high-capability software and get it deployed quickly and correctly. Our team makes the hard things easy, so that our customers – Foursquare’s technical staff – can remain singularly focused on driving value for the products which the company sells.

In this role, you will ship libraries and services with high visibility and of strategic importance to Foursquare. You will operate the software systems, especially build servers and workflow orchestration systems, which provide these capabilities. You’ll listen to our users and review structured summaries of their experiences to identify and close feature gaps. Finally, you’ll maximize our users’ ability to solve their own problems and ship new projects independently, by documenting, demonstrating, and promoting the “paved path” we maintain.

In this role, you’ll

  • Write the software libraries that constitute the “paved path” for our programmers and data scientists, and document their capabilities and limitations
  • Influence key decisions on architecture and implementation of code repositories and shared services
  • Ensure that software builds and deployments are fast, reliable, and observable, by relentlessly optimizing the automation which drives the build process
  • Enable the adoption of new tooling and infrastructure by minimizing the effort to do so by our technical staff – ideally to a situation where no action is required but they get all the benefits anyway
  • Write automation, conduct code reviews, and take end-to-end ownership of deployments to production
  • Participate in on-call rotation duties

What you’ll need

  • BS/BA in a technical field such as computer science or equivalent experience
  • 2-4 years of experience in software development, including operational responsibilities for the production environment
  • Professional experience in a JVM programming language such as Java or Scala
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to specify the capabilities and limitations of the services we manage
  • Strong algorithms and data structures knowledge
  • Comfort with Unix/Linux and the command line
  • Your own unique talents! If you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications outlined above, we encourage and welcome you to still apply!

Benefits and Perks

  • Fully Flexible Workplace - work from home, one of our offices or a combination of the two!
  • Flexible PTO - rest and recharge when you need it!
  • Industry Leading Healthcare - comprehensive and competitive health, vision, dental, life insurance
  • Savings and Investments - 401(k) with company match
  • Home Office Setup - you get all necessary hardware and internet reimbursement
  • Family Planning and Fertility Programs - programs via Carrot and Maven
  • Employee Resource Groups - to help you stay connected

At Foursquare, we are committed to providing competitive pay and benefits that are in line with industry and market standards.  Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, and specific office location.

The annual total cash compensation range is $104,000 - $175,750,
