Description
The Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University seeks two full-time Clinical Assistant Professors in the Department of Counseling.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching clinical courses and utilizing generalist teaching skills for core counseling curriculum.
- Academic (individual and group) advising.
- Clinic administration.
- Clinical supervision of students.
- Supporting departmental program projects and events.
- Providing service to the School and University.
This is a renewable, non-tenured position with an initial one-year appointment beginning August 2025.

The Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development was founded in 2005 and is ranked among the top 11 private education schools in the United States. The school has undergraduate and graduate programs across five academic departments, including Applied Physiology and Wellness, Counseling, Education Policy and Leadership, Human Centered Interdisciplinary Studies, and Teaching and Learning. Comprised of two state-of-the-art academic buildings, the Simmons School has over 80,000 square feet of office and classroom spaces, applied physiology labs, and a 21st century teacher development studio to advance the development of pre-service and in-service teachers. The Simmons School promotes excellence by engaging in and disseminating research, securing significant external grants and contracts, preparing exemplary professionals, and collaborating with other schools on campus.
The Department of Counseling is a part of the prestigious Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University. The SMU Counseling program is ranked nationally among the top 5 best value schools (https://www.bestvalueschools.org/masters-in-counseling/). The Counseling Program maintains approximately 300 graduate students whose capstone experience is practica in the state-of-the-art SMU Center for Family Counseling and other community internship sites. The program offers three CACREP accredited Specialties: Clinical Mental Health; Marriage, Couple & Family; and School Counseling. The Center for Family Counseling, the program’s on-campus clinic, offers services to the community and provides a counseling experience for practicum students prior to their clinical internships.

Qualifications
Required qualifications include:
- A doctoral degree in counseling or counselor education (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from a CACREP-accredited program.
- Clinical supervisory experience and/or a supervisory credential.
- Commitment to diversity and ability to infuse diversity into all classes.
- Teaching experience in counseling-related courses, including clinical courses and counseling core curriculum.
- Demonstrated identity as a counselor educator and clinician.
- Clinical experience in the field.
Preferred qualifications:
- LPC licensure
- Experience managing a counseling clinic
- Experience teaching ethics courses
- Marriage, couple, and family counseling experience
- School counseling experience
- Addiction/substance abuse counseling experience
- One to three years teaching experience
