Cruise is seeking a versatile and self-motivated Senior Counsel to join the Litigation & Investigations team. In this role, you will develop and clearly communicate to the business pragmatic, expert legal advice on a wide variety of autonomous vehicle liability issues. You also will be a key collaborator, problem solver, and thought partner for the Incident Response team, Trust & Safety team, Engineering, and various other business teams at Cruise. If you are a strategic, forward-looking, litigation pro looking for a unique challenge in a mission-driven environment, we look forward to hearing from you.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Successfully resolve vehicle-focused claims, disputes, and litigation with creative and outside-the-box strategies, including managing outside counsel, assessing exposure, setting strategy, supervising discovery and motion practice, and driving resolution decisions.

  • Develop a detailed understanding of the company’s data platforms for eDiscovery purposes, advise internal technical stakeholders on retention needs, manage eDiscovery vendors, tools, and processes for all ongoing litigation, subpoenas, investigations, and regulatory inquiries, and administer legal holds, ensuring preservation of relevant documents and data.

  • Provide legal support for the Incident Response program, working closely with engineering, operations, safety, government affairs, and communications to coordinate incident response efforts and incident readiness programs.

  • Manage Cruise’s third party claims administrator in operating and refining a best-in-class claims process that focuses on doing the right thing and putting our customers first, while maximizing efficiency and maintaining SLA performance targets.

  • Advise and collaborate with partners to continually improve internal procedures that feed into Cruise’s claims processes.

  • Integrate deeply with business and engineering teams to develop a thorough understanding of Cruise’s AV technology, and use that understanding to find opportunities to manage and mitigate risk, troubleshoot business practices that create unnecessary legal exposure, and proactively review existing procedures and recommend improvements.

  • Update the Litigation team on new developments in case law, federal, state and local rules, and other statutory developments impacting discovery, ESI, etc.

  • Participate actively in Litigation team management, including budgeting, forecasting, managing outside counsel, and preparing reports to senior management.

What you must have:

  • Graduate of an accredited law school with at least 7+ years of relevant experience litigating claims or actions in the transportation and/or insurance defense industry.

  • Extensive hands-on experience managing intensive eDiscovery projects, including initial case assessment, strategy development, responding to discovery, overseeing all aspects of eDiscovery, and conducting witness interviews for case-specific document collections.

  • Active member of the California or Texas state bar in good standing; preference for Texas

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, impeccable integrity and judgment, strong analytical skills, and a keen sense of humor.

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and able to manage a large and complex workload.
