About the role

The Opportunity:

Join Avantor as a Director of Business Development – Government & Healthcare and lead national growth initiatives across federal and state agencies, with a focus on strategic partnerships, procurement programs, and scientific service delivery. In this high-impact role, you’ll drive expansion through consultative selling, supplier strategy, and government engagement, while managing key cooperative agreements like NASPO.

This is a national role and can be located anywhere in the U.S., with travel up to 75% to engage with clients, attend trade shows, and support strategic initiatives.

What we are looking for

  • Education: College degree or equivalent/applicable experience required

  • Experience: 5+ years of business development or sales experience in a solution-based, B2B environment.

    • Proven success selling into federal and state government agencies, with strong understanding of procurement processes, grants, and budget cycles

    • Experience managing cooperative agreements such as NASPO or similar buying consortiums

    • Background in pricing strategy, supplier management, and cross-functional collaboration

    • Familiarity with scientific services, laboratory environments, or distribution preferred

    • Valid driver’s license required due to travel expectations

  • Collaboration Tool: Proficiency with CRM systems, using data to manage pipelines and optimize performance

You will thrive by building and executing strategic pricing models, fostering collaboration across internal teams and external government stakeholders, and positioning Avantor as a trusted partner in scientific advancement. Your ability to navigate the complexities of government procurement—including small business enterprise requirements, grant structures, and budget cycles—will be key to unlocking new opportunities and delivering tailored, high-impact solutions.

  • Lead strategic business development efforts across federal and state government sectors, with a focus on cooperative agreements like NASPO

  • Collaborate with Regional Directors, VPs, and Sales Representatives to support state-specific programs and initiatives

  • Manage supplier relationships and develop pricing strategies aligned with government procurement requirements

  • Conduct Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs), lead proposal development, and oversee project execution

  • Prospect and qualify new leads, expand existing accounts, and develop customized service delivery solutions

  • Represent Avantor at trade shows, customer visits, and industry events to promote our value proposition

  • Utilize CRM tools to track progress, report outcomes, and maintain visibility across internal stakeholders

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT (Under Typical Positions)

Typically works in a home office environment with extensive regional travel to customer locations.

Work assignments are diversified. Examples of past precedent are used to resolve work problems. New alternatives may be developed to resolve problems.

A frequent volume of work and deadlines impose strain on routine basis.

Minimal physical effort is required. Work is mostly sedentary but does require walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting or carrying objects that typically weigh less than 10 lbs.
