Overview: 

The Utilities Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of an entry level Electrical Engineer. This position will assist Mechanical/Electrical Utilities with preventive/predictive maintenance planning and programs, system and facility upgrade projects, and assignments to prepare learn operations of Mechanical/Electrical Utilities.  Utilities operates and manages all laboratory utility systems including; steam, water, sewer, chilled water, natural gas, compressed air, storm drains, and the 13.8kV electrical systems to support the research mission and growth of ORNL.

 

This entry level position will be given assignments across all work centers within Utilities Division to gain an understanding of operations, maintenance, and our support mission for research in addition to learning systems, controls, and equipment specific to ORNL. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

• Provide engineering support for the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of all utility systems at the ORNL including work control, outage planning, and project support.

• Perform work planning and supervisor duties as necessary.

• Support configuration control management to ensure that systems and associated equipment are operated and maintained effectively and efficiently.

• Support the development of energy conservation strategies and other performance improvements to reduce costs for utilities and other facility services.

• Support predictive/preventative maintenance programs.

• Support integration of worker safety and health and environmental protection into work planning and execution.

• Attend training and conferences as needed for skillset improvement and job needs.

• Support all work centers and work with craft employees in a union environment.

Basic Qualifications:

• A BS in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.

• 0-2 years of experience in facility systems, operations, and maintenance

• A valid Tennessee driver's license or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment

• Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of standards, codes, and regulations with respect to construction and the maintenance of equipment and facilities.

• Knowledge of 480 volt systems, Variable Frequency Drives, UPS systems, PLCs, Generator and ATS systems

• A strong knowledge of safe equipment operation and safety practices in operating facilities is also required.

• The successful candidate should possess excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse teams of engineers, managers, and craft employees.

• Candidates should have strong computer skills including Microsoft-Office and Microsoft Teams.

• Computer experience with software such as Bluebeam, ClickUp, AutoCAD, and Esri ArcGIS.

• The ability to understand and manage technical issues related to facility infrastructure

• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 

• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirements:

• Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

• Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
