POSITION SUMMARY:

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to poor physical and mental health outcomes throughout the life course. ACEs disproportionately affect children from marginalized communities and are repeated intergenerationally. On the other hand, sensitive and responsive early caregiving builds resilience and provides children with the emotional tools to manage later adversity. Programs that support parents during the perinatal period and through early childhood have been shown to increase caregiving sensitivity. Such programs have been developed and adapted in a variety of settings and cultural contexts around the world.

Project: Dr. Levey is a global mental health researcher who has worked to develop early intervention programs in such diverse settings as Peru, El Salvador, Pakistan, India, and the Mississippi Delta Region. SEED (Starting Early

to Enhance Development) is a new clinical program in the Department of Psychiatry at BMC that will be offering groups and individual treatment to families from pregnancy through age 5. The research assistant will support the

roll out of this program by working closely with Dr. Levey and her team to identify training opportunities for clinicians, recruit patients, track outcomes, and explore programs at other institutions that are offering similar types

of services in order to shape how the SEED program will grow. There will also be opportunities to analyze data from other global settings and integrate those findings with the work of SEED.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides a wide variety of administrative and general support duties in assigned areas.
  • Collaborates with staff on special projects, prepares related spreadsheets and other documents as required
  • Completes data collection, data analysis and other duties as necessary for successful completion of the department’s projects and initiatives.
  • May assist the principal investigator with translation to Spanish or Haitian Creole, interpreting experimental results, and in preparing and writing manuscripts.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

- Assist with patient recruitment for clinical programs and research studies.

- Create systems for collecting data and tracking patient outcomes.

- Review literature on infant mental health and parent-infant clinical programs.

- Help prepare grant applications for research to study program outcomes.

EDUCATION:

  • Recent college graduate or student enrolled in a related graduate or undergraduate degree program, preferably beyond a second semester junior.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Must have the ability to perform multiple tasks and prioritize duties
  • Ability to work independently
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have an interest in performing new and varied work assignments, and be flexible with regard to work assignments
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Word is required. Knowledge or ability to learn Minitab.
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality
