Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Corning is a global leader in specialty glass and optical communications — and our Wilmington, NC facility is where the fiber that connects the world gets made. As a Senior Development Engineer, you'll design and industrialize next-generation optical fiber manufacturing platforms, turning complex technical challenges into solutions that improve quality, yield, and efficiency at scale. This is a hands-on, high-impact engineering role at the intersection of materials science, process engineering, and manufacturing innovation.

- Apply scientific methods, root cause analysis, and structured experimentation to identify and resolve manufacturing process limitations
- Partner with cross-functional teams across technology development and manufacturing to drive improvements in yield, throughput, quality, and cost efficiency
- Troubleshoot glassmaking platforms, execute equipment validation testing, and develop data-driven recommendations
- Document and communicate technical findings, project updates, and recommendations to team members and leadership
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical, Materials, Ceramics, or a related Engineering discipline
- Minimum years of experience in process or mechanical engineering with a track record of delivering measurable business outcomes
- Strong foundation in physical phenomena and engineering principles applied to manufacturing processes
- Proven ability to design experiments, analyze complex data sets, and drive root cause resolution
- Experience translating technical findings into engineering requirements and process or equipment designs
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as JMP, Python, or Power BI
- Comfortable working hands-on with manufacturing equipment, instruments, and measurement devices in a production environment
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with optical fiber, glassmaking, or specialty materials manufacturing processes and equipment
- Experience leading or mentoring technical engineering teams
- Proficiency in computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools (e.g., ANSYS, MATLAB, Fluent, Aspen)
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor)
