Job Description

Saint Paul College seeks energetic and dedicated individuals to apply for a full-time (1.0) carpentry instructor position. The instructor is responsible for:

  • Working closely with the Dean and advisory committees, generating several hands-on learning projects for students in and outside of classroom learning.

  • Provide classroom instruction, evaluate and advise students;

  • Develop and/or revise curriculum;

  • Participate in department meetings, program advisory committee meetings, and college-wide events;

  • Maintain technical knowledge in the field through active participation in professional development organizations and events

  • Promote and recruit programs within and outside of the College

  • Promote diversity and cultural competency

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Academic Dean or Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement

  • Diploma from a carpentry program or completion of a registered carpentry apprenticeship program.

Occupational Experience Requirement

  • Four full-time (or equivalent) years of verified related paid work experience as a carpenter.

Recency Requirement

  • One year of this work experience shall be within the five years immediately preceding the date of application for the credential field. The recency requirement shall be waived if the individual has two years of successful full-time (or equivalent) postsecondary teaching experience in the credential field within the last five years.

  • Must meet the Teaching and Learning Competency Requirement before the end of the probationary period

Preferred Qualification 

  • Experience working with non-profits and community partners on trades-based projects.

  • Three years of carpentry experience;

  • Two years of community college teaching experience;

  • Previous teaching experience in an urban two-year college;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;

  • Ability to work both independently and with a variety of people as a team member;

  • Knowledge of multi-cultural, gender- and disability-fair curriculum development;

  • Ability to work with a diverse student body with a broad range of interests and abilities;

  • Experience with course construction, curriculum development and classroom management;

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, PowerPoint;

  • Experience with web-enhanced and on-line course teaching with the D2L Platform.
