Postdoctoral Fellowship

Description

Carnegie Institution for Science’s Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship with a primary focus on the petrology and geochemistry of carbonatite and alkaline magmatism, and their related rare metal resources. The fellowship will be hosted at the EPL campus in Washington, DC, and have a duration of up to 2 years. The fellow will work under the mentorship of staff scientist Dr. Andrea Giuliani, and may also propose independent research on secondary topics of mutual interest.

 

EPL is an interdisciplinary basic research laboratory; research and collaboration with multiple research areas on campus is encouraged. EPL scientists engage in observational, experimental and theoretical research in fields including geophysics, geodynamics, geochemistry, geobiology, volcanology, experimental petrology and mineral physics, planetary science, cosmochemistry, astrobiology, astronomy, data science, and the chemistry and physics of materials. New fellows will join a supportive community of about 25 postdoctoral scientists and 30 staff and research scientists engaged in understanding the origin and evolution of Earth and planets and materials under extreme conditions. Our postdoctoral fellows have access to: world-class laboratory facilities in analytical geochemistry and cosmochemistry, high-pressure research, materials structure and properties characterization, and computational facilities to support data-analytic investigations. Funding is available for travel and publications. At EPL, we foster an exceptionally collegial research environment and promote mentoring, including professional development opportunities specifically for postdocs.

 

The position allows start dates between July 1 and December 31, 2026. The fellowship is initially awarded for one year but can be extended to two years depending on performance. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field at the time of the start of the fellowship. The principal selection criteria will be a genuine interest in and understanding of carbonatite and/or alkaline magmatism and/or rare metal deposits based on the research proposal, research accomplishment, and independence.
