GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:

The Police Chief is responsible for planning, organizing, administering, and evaluating the continuing development of both law enforcement and conservation protection for the Stockbridge Munsee Community. This position will have primary responsibility for operational oversight and administration of the program of law enforcement. Create a focus on community policing within the Stockbridge Munsee Community. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

DUTIES:

  1. Responsible for maintaining funding levels; monitoring federal, state, local and Tribal grant applications.
  2. Responsible for completing annual budgetary processes; making recommendations concerning needs and resources for the operations of the department(s).
  3. Manages and directs departmental personnel. Responsible for all departmental investigations; patrol and emergency management.
  4. Evaluates staffing needs, makes decisions concerning personnel actions, performance evaluations and training standards. Counsels, trains and advises departments’ employees on department policies and procedures pertaining to law, fire and conservation enforcement, internal personnel and administrative procedures.
  5. Assists in the preparation and oversight of the cooperative law enforcement agreements and/or service agreements between the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, Shawano County, and Villages of Bowler and Gresham.
  6. Providing and maintaining a high level of Community Policing within the Stockbridge Munsee Community.
  7. Monitors and supervises the enforcement of laws and ordinances within the Tribe and County.
  8. Reviews, investigates, and resolves department or citizen complaints concerning law enforcement and conservation activities.
  9. Prepares or oversees the preparation of all departments’ reports, assuming direct responsibility for quality, content, criteria, and submission timeframes.
  10. Work directly with Human Resources for record keeping and training purposes.
  11. Directs efforts of staff during emergency situations within the Stockbridge-Munsee Community and coordinates efforts with various emergency services workers.
  12. Responds to various incidents, completing weekly patrol rotations in order to maintain acceptable tactical performance levels.
  13. Attend all required but not exclusively, Shawano County Local Emergency Planning Committee, and Shawano County Sheriff’s Department Command Meetings.
  14. Must maintain an acceptable departmental attendance record.
  15. Must be reliable and prompt when reporting to work.
  16. Required to attend job related, in-service, meetings, and training to maintain professional and technical knowledge.
  17. Must adhere to tribal law and other applicable laws as well as tribal personnel policies and procedures.
  18. Shall be required to satisfactorily complete an exam or other testing requirement(s) to determine skill proficiency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelors Degree in Criminology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, or Law Enforcement preferred five (5) years working experience in similar occupation. Transcripts must be included with application/resume.
  2. A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory law enforcement experience with proven experience in organizing, directing and training staff.
  3. Must be Wisconsin DOJ Law Enforcement Board Certified as a Police Officer.
  4. Must be able to be deputized by the Shawano County Sherriff and maintain deputy status.
  5. Exceptional communication skills with the ability to communicate at a variety of levels in various programs and software.
  6. Experience in budget development is mandatory.
  7. Must submit to and pass psychological test.
