Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage tax controversy engagements, including IRS and state audits, appeals, and post-audit resolution

  • Represent clients in communications with taxing authorities, including preparing formal responses, position papers, protests, and settlement discussions

  • Advise clients on audit risk and defend technical tax positions related to income tax, cost recovery, R&D credits, and other complex issues

  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments relevant to controversy and translate impacts into client guidance

  • Partner with legal and technical tax teams to develop strategies for audit defense and resolution

  • Manage IDRs and audit documentation in coordination with clients and internal teams

  • Mentor and develop tax staff and managers working on controversy and technical tax engagements

  • Support business development efforts by identifying controversy-related service opportunities and participating in client pitches

  • Maintain strong relationships with IRS personnel and industry peers to stay current on procedural changes and enforcement trends

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in federal tax controversy, IRS representation, or related tax technical roles

  • Experience in a public accounting firm, law firm, or with the IRS

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification

  • In-depth knowledge of IRS practice and procedure, including exam, appeals, and alternative dispute resolution processes

  • Proven success in managing audits, defending complex tax positions, and negotiating favorable outcomes

  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills, particularly in client and IRS-facing interactions
