About the Role

As an Engineering Manager on the Personal Loans team at LendingClub, you will lead a team of software engineers in designing, building, and enhancing the systems that power personal loan originations, underwriting, borrower experiences, and operational workflows. You will guide the development of resilient, scalable backend services while fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement.

Your experience delivering high availability distributed systems, driving backend technical strategy, mentoring engineers, and collaborating cross functionally will enable you to meaningfully advance LendingClub’s mission to transform consumer lending through innovation and responsible technology.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing engineering team focused on backend systems supporting the originations journey.
  • Drive the technical vision, architectural direction, and engineering roadmap for key platforms and services.
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and Operations to translate business needs into scalable, high‑impact technical solutions.
  • Guide the team in delivering features end‑to‑end across Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, distributed systems, and AWS services.
  • Ensure the team builds high‑availability, fault‑tolerant services with a strong emphasis on observability, performance, and security.
  • Facilitate technical design discussions, code reviews, and architectural evaluations.
  • Balance delivery of new capabilities with long‑term platform reliability, refactoring, and technical debt management.
  • Cultivate a positive engineering culture grounded in collaboration, accountability, continuous learning, and craftsmanship.
  • Own team execution—setting priorities, aligning on milestones, removing blockers, and ensuring consistent delivery.
  • Promote operational excellence
  • Master team metrics (services and team performance)

About You

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years in a people‑leadership or team‑lead role; bachelor’s in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong background in backend engineering, distributed systems, and service‑oriented architecture.
  • Expertise with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and cloud-native development (AWS preferred).
  • Solid understanding of modern engineering practices: CI/CD, testing strategies, code quality, observability, and performance optimization.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through ambiguity, set direction, and drive alignment across stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate business objectives into clear engineering plans and technical designs.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills—you make complex technical concepts accessible.
  • Passion for mentorship, coaching, and career development of engineers.
  • Commitment to building inclusive, high‑trust, high‑impact engineering teams.

Bonus Points

  • Experience in regulated industries or with compliance-heavy platforms.
  • Financial services or lending industry experience.
  • Experience with large-scale service migrations.
  • Familiarity with frontend or full‑stack environments (even if backend‑heavy).
  • Experience leveraging AI tooling to improve developer workflows or service capabilities.
