The Orthodox Union (OU) is one of the largest Orthodox Jewish organizations in the United States. Founded in 1898, the OU supports a network of synagogues, youth programs, Jewish and Religious Zionist advocacy programs, programs for the disabled, localized religious study programs, and international units. The OU maintains a kosher certification service, whose circled U symbol, Ⓤ, is found on the labels of many kosher commercial and consumer food products.
Position Summary:
The Orthodox Union is seeking a Facilities & Building Operations Manager to support the day-to-day functioning of our headquarters and related facilities. This role works closely with the Director of Production & Mail Services. The role is responsible for ensuring that building systems, physical infrastructure, and facility needs are addressed efficiently and reliably.
The ideal candidate is hands-on, organized, and comfortable taking ownership of building-related matters while supporting broader operational and production needs.
This position is based at our headquarters, five days per week, with potential travel between offices throughout the New York area.
Responsibilities:
Building & Facilities Operations
- Actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the building, monitoring HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other core systems.
- Serve as the on-site first responder for facilities issues, troubleshooting initial concerns, and coordinating next steps.
- Work directly with service vendors to schedule, oversee, and follow up on maintenance and repairs.
- Conduct regular building walkthroughs to identify issues early and flag items that require attention.
Production, Mail & Workspace Support
- Provide hands-on facilities support for production, mail, and logistics activities in partnership with the Director of Production & Mail Services.
- Assist with office moves, furniture setup, workspace changes, and departmental reconfigurations.
- Support large mailings and operational projects by helping with physical setup, space needs, and logistics coordination.
Safety & Building Readiness
- Help maintain a safe, orderly, and functional environment for staff and visitors.
- Support basic safety practices, emergency readiness, and building preparedness.
General Operations Support
- Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for all facilities-related matters, responding to staff inquiries, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating timely resolutions.
- Work closely with the Operations team and other departments to address practical, physical, and logistical needs as they arise.
Qualifications:
- 3–5 years of experience in facilities and building operations
- Practical familiarity with building systems, especially HVAC, whether through direct involvement or managing service providers.
- Comfortable juggling multiple requests and responding quickly to issues as they come up.
- Enjoys working on-site and being physically present in the building.
- Clear communicator with a helpful, problem-solving approach.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a nonprofit, institutional, or office-based environment.
- Exposure to production, mail services, or logistics operations.
- Facilities-related training or certifications are a plus, not required.
Salary & Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $65,000, commensurate with experience.
