Summary

The ADC is the state agency charged with ensuring court-appointed legal representation to indigent individuals in criminal and youth cases when the Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) has a conflict of interest. We work with over 35 full-time staff and 1300 contractors statewide to ensure constitutionally mandated representation. The ADC is a dynamic agency that operates within legislative, budgetary, and policy constraints to provide holistic representation to clients across the state.

Examples of duties

The Office of the Alternate Defense Counsel (ADC) is seeking multiple Regional Coordinating Attorneys to support contractor operations, regional engagement, and statewide coordination across Colorado. ADC is currently hiring coordinators for regions across Colorado outside of the Denver metro area, with positions focused in rural, mountain, and western slope judicial districts.

The Regional Coordinating Attorney supports attorney contractor operations, regional engagement, and statewide coordination within an assigned region of Colorado. The position works closely with attorney contractors, courts, stakeholders, interdisciplinary defense professionals, program leaders, and ADC agency leadership to support case assignments, funding approvals, contractor communication, renewal evaluations, court observations, and regional collaboration.

While this position primarily supports attorney contractors, it operates within ADC's holistic, client-centered defense model and will be instrumental in advancing holistic practices through interdisciplinary teams. The role helps strengthen professional connection, mentorship, communication, and problem-solving across judicial districts while promoting client-centered, interdisciplinary team-based representation and supporting ADC's mission statewide.

Location Requirement

Regional Coordinating Attorneys are expected to reside in, or relocate to, their assigned region of Colorado to support local and regional relationship-building, engagement, and stakeholder communication.

ADC is currently seeking to place Regional Coordinating Attorneys in rural, mountain, and western slope Colorado communities.

ADC is not currently seeking placements in Denver metro and Front Range judicial districts, including Judicial Districts 1, 2, 17, 18, 20, and 23.

Qualifications

  •  Juris Doctorate and licensed to practice law in the United States for at least five years prior to hire and be in good standing. Must be admitted to the Colorado State Bar within one year of hire, if not already admitted.

  • Experience defending indigent individuals charged in the criminal and/or youth legal systems in trial, appellate and/or postconviction matters.

  • Experience working collaboratively with attorneys, courts, and interdisciplinary professionals.

  • Demonstrated commitment to client-centered representation, holistic defense principles, and interdisciplinary criminal defense practice.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a process-oriented approach to administration, documentation, and decision-making.
