GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Provide support and maintenance of fleet vehicles and equipment as well as Federal Excess Personal Property (FEPP) and Firefighter Property (FFP). Travel to remote locations to perform these duties, as needed. In the absence of the supervisor, provide supervision of three mechanics. Provide direction on a daily basis to mechanics by the direction of the supervisor on maintenance, repair and inspections of fire apparatus, shop equipment and fleet vehicles, and fabrication of new equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
- Evaluate mechanical problems, perform diagnostic tests, interpret the results and decide the best course of action needed.
- Diagnose and repair special computerized equipment.
- Travel for field repairs and annual services.
- Inspect and maintain shop equipment and train staff on how to use new equipment.
- Run reports to ensure that preventive maintenance is accomplished on equipment.
Examples of duties
PREFERENCES:
Class A CDL with tanker endorsement.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Use of diagnostic scanners for automotive repairs.
- Possess a high level of mechanical ability.
- Ability to troubleshoot various mechanical issues with a given piece of equipment.
- Ability to gas and arc weld using cutting torches and plasma cutters and also design parts.
- Ability to use hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of hydraulics, electrical, welding/fabrication, auto body/paint.
- Knowledge of repair methods and techniques including diesel, heavy equipment and light duty vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Ability to obtain a CDL
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May be required to work in all objectionable conditions: outside, cold, heat, wind, roadside, etc.
- May be required to work with hazardous materials in the repair of equipment which requires the use of special protective equipment, respirator, rubber suit, gloves, goggles, etc.
