About the Team:

The Crunchyroll team is growing and expanding our video engineering organization to provide our Anime fans across the globe with a high-quality, innovative, performant, and reliable video playback experience. Our video teams take on building and maintaining business-critical video systems and video-related cloud solutions. We work with multiple teams to build scalable and reliable services.

A Day in the Life of a Staff Software Engineer

• Elevate video transcoding to new heights and craft an awe-inspiring, best-in-class experience for our fans worldwide!
• Design & build highly efficient services and infrastructure for video encoding, delivery & playback
• Work with product teams to drive both new features and improve and maintain critical consumer-facing services
• Collaborate with internal teams and ensure they are successful in ingesting video content
• Establish mechanisms to ensure the ingested content is delivered to our end users in a highly optimized & secured manner (protected with DRM)
• Collaborate with client engineering teams, infrastructure, and core system teams, ensuring the highest quality video playback to fans
• Innovate on technologies used to deliver an outstanding experience

About You:

• 6+ years of software development experience with OTT video delivery
• Dedicated knowledge in video streaming delivery, video encoding workflows, video origin architecture, and scaling video delivery for fans across the globe
• Experience with one or more high-level languages, including Javascript/TypeScript is a plus
• Expertise in video transcoding, DRM, and video packaging workflows and related tools
• Knowledge of cloud-based encoding workflows and how they integrate with industry standards audio/video codecs (AVC/HEVC/DD+), HDR (HDR10/Dolby Vision), DRM technologies (Fairplay, Playready, Widevine).
• Expert in HTTP-based adaptive video delivery formats (HLS, DASH), packaging, and delivery
• Expertise in dynamic ad insertion, both client-side and server-side
• Knowledge of cloud delivery (AWS or GCP).
• Experience building highly scalable, distributed systems
• Always advocating for engineering excellence and operational excellence
• Enjoy taking ownership of critical operations
• Passionate about finding simple solutions to sophisticated technical challenges
• Deep understanding of QoE/QoS (metrics and data points) related to video distribution and understanding the observability and monitoring and taking steps to improve them
• Ambitious in your goals but pragmatic in your approach
• Insist on following standard methodologies in all aspects of engineering and video delivery (KISS, OOP, SOLID, etc.)
• Strong understanding of playback flows from a client application standpoint
• A willingness to be on-call on a rotational basis to quickly address customer-facing issues
• Strong quantitative, analytical, problem-solving, debugging, and decision-making skills.
