About the role

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.

Our Vision

  • We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
  • We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
  • The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond

Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.

The Opportunity

The Data Science platform at CZ Biohub SF (https://www.czbiohub.org/data-science/) is passionate about turning complex multi-modal biological data into actionable insights. Big-data biology requires innovations in data analysis and visualization to catalyze interpretation and discovery. We are seeking a multi-disciplinary Bioinformatics Data Scientist (Systems Biology and Data Visualization) to develop scalable bioinformatics pipelines, pioneer novel methods for multi-modal data analysis (clustering, network analysis, machine learning), and build data visualization solutions and web portals. The candidate will work closely with data scientists, software engineers, and experts in genomics and cell biology in a team-science environment.

This is a great opportunity for candidates with a passion for both the quantitative analysis of big datasets and the development of compelling data visualization platforms.

You will

  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of data scientists, software engineers, and experts in genomics and cell biology to pursue audacious, important scientific challenges
  • Pioneer novel methods for multi-modal data analysis (clustering, network analysis, data embedding, modality fusion, etc.) and develop new data visualization solutions
  • Develop scalable data pipelines for large, state-of-the-art biological datasets and prototype web-based data portals
  • Author publications and openly disseminate research discoveries to the scientific community

You have

Essential –

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, or a related discipline and a working knowledge of Cellular Biology
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience analyzing large biological datasets (ex. genomics, proteomics, imaging) and 2 years of experience building data visualization solutions
  • Passion for systems biology and open-source software
  • Familiarity with professional software development best practices (testing, documentation, version control, etc.)
  • Familiarity with at least one web portal development framework/tech stack
  • A collaborative, team-focused mindset coupled with outstanding communication skills, and ability to work in an agile environment
  • Good data science practices and data intuition for biological high-throughput data

Nice to have -

  • Experience with tech stack tools such as Nginx, PostgreSQL, Django, React, npm
  • Experience with training and fine-tuning self-supervised deep learning models
  • Experience with API development
