About the role

Job Description:

The Assistant Director of Pre-College Student Life - Staff Development contributes to these goals by facilitating all Pre- College Student Life staff recruitment, retention, and development initiatives. The result of this work will be the successful recruitment and retention of highly qualified staff who receive comprehensive onboarding and ongoing training that adequately prepares them to be successful in their roles. Staff will also receive developmental mentorship to help them reflect upon the competencies, skills, and abilities they develop through doing this work. Additionally, the Assistant Director creates and implements a developmentally appropriate student conduct process for pre-college students. The Assistant Director participates in the summer on-call duty rotation and supervises a cohort of seasonal staff. Due to the on-call requirements, the person in this position must be able to exercise good judgment with minimal sleep and must live within a 35-minute driving distance to the Brown University Campus. Evening and weekend hours will be required during the summer months.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit and select Pre-College Student Life staff 25 %

  • On-board, train, and coordinate ongoing professional development for Pre-College Student Life Seasonal Staff 30%

  • Supervise a cohort of seasonal staff, ensuring that a comprehensive and consistent program of support and accountability is maintained 20%

  • Contribute to the ongoing delivery, quality, and strategic development of various administrative processes and student support initiatives in an effort to foster a seamless, welcoming, and safe experience for participants 15%

  • Oversee the development and implementation of student non-academic policies and disciplinary processes for students 10%

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in higher education, education, or a related field strongly preferred.

  • 3+ years’ experience in pre-college programs, K-12 education, higher education/student affairs administration, human development, accessibility services, or similar field required.

  • Experience in an academic setting strongly preferred.

  • Experience supervising staff and/or students required.

  • Significant experience working with adolescents required, ideally in residential settings

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required

  • Demonstrated record of exercising effective independent professional judgment and integrity, and maintaining confidentiality.

  • Demonstrated ability to creatively and efficiently problem solve - utilizing sound judgment, assuming ownership of a problem, and resolving it in a collaborative manner

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and to manage multiple tasks effectively

  • Strong ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, and colleagues

  • Energy, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor

  • Flexibility to respond to sudden shifts in demands and urgent reporting needs, and to evolve with a dynamic student affairs environment

  • Working knowledge of principles, practices and theories of student learning and development; understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of diverse student residential communities

  • Evidence of cultural competence and inclusiveness; sensitivity to and understanding of diverse perspectives that students and staff bring to their work, including those of academic, socioeconomic, culture, race and ethnicity, ability, gender, sexuality, religion, and intersectional identities

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse staff and student body and evidence of cultural competence and inclusiveness
