Summary
The Library Technician provides a wide range of services, primarily focused on the library patrons’ experience, but also assists with tasks across all library operations. Responsible for staffing the circulation desk, maintaining the physical stacks, and guiding and training work-study students. They also assist with services such as: course reserves; interlibrary loan; acquisitions processing; digitization; and the Library’s social media presence, amongst other activities, depending on the Library’s needs.
This is a part-time position for a specific shift:
Friday 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Sunday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Monday 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Essential Functions
Public Service
Customer service skills are required to ensure high-quality services and assist with departmental operations.
Circulates materials to patrons at the Barry University circulation desk.
Answers directional, light reference, and informational questions, and refers reference and other queries to librarians as appropriate.
Assists patrons with photocopying and printing, provides routine maintenance/cleaning of photocopy machines, and reports malfunctions.
Assists patrons in the use of computer catalogs and indexes, and audio-visual equipment and collections; provides appropriate routine emergency and preventive maintenance, and reports malfunctions of equipment.
Creates library displays, contributes to “Staff Recommendations”, designs library outreach materials (often collaborating with other staff), participates in library open house events, and contributes to social media outreach through library accounts.
Performs all public service tasks in a friendly and efficient manner; contributes to a welcoming atmosphere for library patrons.
Contributes to the organization and creation of processes to enhance library services.
Designs and implements organizational projects as needed.
Maintains effective methods of communication with faculty and students, circulation staff, and other library staff.
Technological skills including performing Public Services tasks (performing circulation transactions, processing requests and traces, opening/ closing of the library, processing, and assisting reserve requests, assisting patron inquiries and issues)
Collecting fees/ fines for library materials
Staffing the circulation desk ( responding to patron issues and questions regarding the library and its collection, assisting in solving patron technical issues regarding library-related equipment.
Collection Maintenance
Coordinates and participates in stack maintenance activities including shelving and shelf reading of all library materials, and assists in training and supervising student assistants in these areas.
Processes claims-returned/not-on-shelf searches, following automated and manual procedures, and records related statistics.
Maintains new periodicals and new book shelf areas.
Library Services
Active attendance at departmental meetings as scheduled by the Public Services Manager.
Active attendance at the once-a-month library team meeting.
Assists Librarians with library processes.
Assists the Library Director and Associate Director with library processes as needed.
Processes donations following library procedures.
Transferring and assigning library-related materials to designated areas and departments for repair, relocation, etc.
Searching for and collecting misplaced items and returning them to their appropriate location for patron use.
Assist in the daily flow of library operations by:
Aiding with other units within the library when necessary, and assisting in gathering data for library reports and statistics.
Providing patron assistance and displaying supportive customer service to all constituents of the university.
Performing data input and aiding in collaboration with library supervision regarding usage of library resources, and statistical data for library-related reports.
Assisting patrons with computer-related issues and solving technical related issues concerning the library and its resources.
Financial and Management
Collects fines, membership dues, and conducts other appropriate financial transactions at the circulation desk.
Prepares deposits and ensures appropriate cash handling and security procedures
