Position Summary

The SummerWorks LIT lead counselor mentors middle-school campers while supporting the LIT team and the SummerWorks administrative team. They guide campers in developing leadership skills, mentoring younger campers, engaging in community projects, and exploring new opportunities and experiences. The LIT lead counselor helps maintain a safe and fun camp environment and step in wherever campers or staff need guidance. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic, organized, and creative leaders who bring responsibility, initiative, patience, and a positive, collaborative spirit to every day.


Primary Job Responsibilities

Staff training


Play an active role in pre-camp staff training and weekly staff meetings, both in planning and execution
Build strong team dynamics and facilitate daily age group check-ins


Staff supervision


Provide guidance and support for the LIT counselor
Address and resolve staff concerns promptly and professionally (within 24 hours)
Mentor staff and model professionalism, positivity, and appropriate boundaries
Check in regularly with counselors to offer guidance, support, and feedback
Promote staff morale through encouragement, recognition, and open communication


Activity Planning & Co-Facilitation 


Plan and implement daily activities alongside counselors, modeling best practices and providing in-the-moment support
Assist in creating weekly age-group plans
Support daily check-in/check-out routines, morning announcements, den time, and Friday Finale activities
Oversee transitions, including field trips, snack time, and downtime
Set up, maintain, and clean activity spaces
Other duties as assigned


Family Communication


Communicate with families about camper illness, injury, behavior issues, authorized pick-ups, positive highlights of the day, etc, at camper check-in and check-out
Be available as needed to meet with families to address specific concerns or issues


Administrative tasks


Maintain working knowledge of all camper and schedule information for their assigned age group
Serve as the primary point of contact for counselors when camper or schedule information needs clarification
Communicate relevant information to counselors to support daily supervision and programming
Implement assigned den groupings, schedules, staff assignments, and break schedules as provided


Camper support


Aware of all behavior issues and dynamics that arise within your age division 
Explain SummerWorks expectations for campers and the safety rules to counselors and assist in explaining these to the campers every Monday and throughout the week
First line of support for counselors 
Respond to emergencies calmly and professionally


Field trip management 


Communicate field trip logistics to cubs director and counselors
Assist with preparing and organizing necessary field trip materials (camp t-shirts, first aid kits, water bottles, snacks, forms, medications, charged phones, and name tags)
Review bus and field trip expectations with counselors and campers
Support timely departure and return by following established procedures and schedules 
Assist with camper supervision and transitions before, during, and after the field trip
Assist and follow established emergency procedures and immediately notify the SummerWorks director
