Position Summary

The SummerWorks Cubs director provides leadership and vision for the Cubs program, shaping a safe, joyful, and developmentally rich experience for our youngest campers (ages 4 & 5). This role oversees daily programming, supervises and evaluates lead counselors and counselors, and ensures smooth transitions, behavior management, and camper support throughout the day. The Cubs director also manages program logistics, including schedules, field trips, and serves as the primary point of contact for families and the administrative team. They assess program effectiveness, implement improvements, and foster a positive, collaborative team culture that supports both campers and staff. Ideal candidates are experienced, organized, and enthusiastic leaders with a passion for child development, strong communication skills, and the ability to inspire and guide a dynamic staff team.


Primary Job Responsibilities

Staff training


Plan, lead, and oversee pre-camp staff training and weekly staff meetings
Set expectations, goals, and norms for the cubs counselor team
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate lead counselors and counselors


Staff supervision


Ability to provide support and supervise 4-5 counselors
Address, resolve, and document staff concerns promptly and professionally (within 24 hours)
Hold weekly 1:1 check-ins with Cubs staff and facilitate self-evaluations
Provide formal feedback, coaching, and performance guidance to staff
Mentor staff and model professionalism, positivity, and appropriate boundaries
Ensure appropriate staffing coverage at all times and actively manage schedules so staff take their assigned breaks as scheduled.
Promote staff morale through encouragement, recognition, and open communication


Program evaluation & continuous improvement


Conduct ongoing assessment of program effectiveness, including camper and family satisfaction, staff performance, and logistical systems
Collect feedback from staff and families and incorporate insights into program improvements
Maintain documentation of program metrics, staff evaluations, and activity outcomes


Activity Planning & Co-Facilitation 


Oversee age-group activity planning and implementation ensuring alignment with camp goals and developmental best practices
Create and approve weekly age-group activity plans and adjust as needed throughout the summer
Establish and oversee check-in/check-out procedures and transition schedules
Coordinate and lead morning announcements for the cubs division
Design and oversee den time and Friday Finale programming
Ensure smooth transitions throughout the day, including field trips, snack time, and downtime
Ensure activities spaces are prepared, safe, and well-maintained, delegating setup and cleanup responsibilities
Other duties as assigned


Family Communication


Serve as the primary point of contact for families regarding significant or ongoing concerns, including illness, injury, behavior issues, or policy-related matters
Lead meeting with families to address concerns, determine next steps, and document outcomes
Support and guide lead counselors and counselors in family communication, ensuring consistency and professionalism
Communicate and update the assistant director and SummerWorks director regarding any significant issues or situations that need additional support or awaren
