Position Summary: The Chipper Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining the chipper equipment to process wood materials efficiently, safely, and in accordance with production standards. This role involves monitoring machine performance, ensuring proper feed of materials, and performing routine maintenance to keep equipment running at optimal capacity.
Primary Duties:
- Operate chipper machines to process wood and by-products into chips according to specifications.
- Monitor the feed system to ensure consistent flow and prevent jams or blockages.
- Perform visual inspections of equipment before, during, and after operation to identify any mechanical issues or safety hazards.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the chipper area, including removing debris and ensuring safe walkways.
- Follow all safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform basic maintenance and lubrication on chipper equipment; report major mechanical problems to maintenance personnel.
- Record production data, downtime, and maintenance activities as required.
- Assist with other mill operations when necessary.
Required Qualifications:
- Previous experience operating chipper or similar heavy equipment in a sawmill or manufacturing environment preferred but not required.
- Mechanical aptitude with ability to perform basic equipment maintenance.
- Strong attention to safety and ability to follow detailed operating procedures.
- Physical ability to work in a loud, dusty, and fast-paced environment; must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various weather conditions.
- Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
