Laboratory Technician I - Laboratory of Dr. Rusty Gage

As a Lab Technician I, this position will be supporting the laboratory of Dr. Rusty Gage (Laboratory of Genetics) where they will focus on research support related to developing novel organoid-based stem cells models of the brain subsequently used to study human microglia in various diseased conditions. They will assist in the preparation of media, maintaining and expanding cell lines, differentiation of organoids, immunohistochemistry, and occasional molecular biology techniques will be performed related to RNA extraction and flow cytometry. They will also partake in animal work including maintaining rodent colonies and tissue preparation. The Lab Technician will work closely alongside a Graduate Student who will provide direct supervision. The role involves receiving comprehensive training in various research techniques to offer valuable research support. The Lab Technician will be responsible for conducting experiments designed by the Graduate Student and ensuring precise execution, documentation, and organization of experimental procedures and outcomes.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

• Assist in the maintenance of iPSC/ESC cell lines and culturing organoids and microglia
• Prepare media following sterile technique.
• Perform maxi preps and plasmid cloning and produce and titrate lentivirus from human cell lines.
• Conduct tissue processing for immunohistochemistry including cryosectioning, antibody staining, and fluorescent imaging.
• Assist in maintaining rodent colonies and tissue extraction.
• Prepare samples for analysis, following established procedures and safety guidelines.
• Conduct basic tests and measurements under the guidance of Graduate Student.
• Record experimental data accurately and maintain detailed laboratory records.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
• Follow laboratory policies and procedures, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

What we Require

• No professional experience is required.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Computer skills required: Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite programs; preferred skills included experience with R or Python
• Other skills (preferred): willingness to participate in animal work
• Other skills (preferred): sterile technique handling experience and previous work in tissue culture settings

What We Can Offer

The expected pay range for this position is $18.03 to $21.00 hourly. Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
