Job Summary:

Serves as the liaison between the residents and faculty of the Physician Residency Program, serving as the spokespersons for residents during their attendance at various hospital and administrative functions. Provides leadership for the resident group and works constructively to solve problems in coordination with the Program Director. Assumes a vital role in the day-to-day functioning of the residency and the future direction of the program. The Chiefs have the opportunity to develop leadership, management, and administrative skills. The incoming chief residents are required to attend an annual “Chief Resident” conference.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD): Required
  • Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine: Required

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) American Heart Association: Required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS OR HS-ACLS OR RQIACLS) certification: Preferred
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS OR HS-PALS OR RQIPALS) certification: Preferred
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification: Preferred

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in the administration, management, and policy development in areas pertaining to resident matters. Prepares the inpatient resident schedule and addresses scheduling changes as conflicts arise. Assists in the planning and implementation of new resident orientation. Assists with conference curriculum (e.g., recruiting speakers, scheduling). Assists the Residency Director with the attendance roster for required conferences. Assists in overseeing that residents who are on an away rotation have adequate coverage for their patient panel, continuity maternity-care patients, clinical mailbox and Centricity mailbox.
  • Attends key meetings including, but not limited to Program Evaluation Committee Meetings, Family Medicine Department Faculty Meetings, Graduate Medical Education Committees and Chairs resident only meetings.
  • Acts as primary liaison between faculty and residents and assist in the resolution of problems and conflicts among residents. Serves as a liaison with other departments in matters pertaining to resident affairs. Advises the Residency Director on issues relevant and important to the residency.
  • Provides mentorship of interns. Leads and acts as a role model for residents and medical students. Facilitates/ensures resident participation in residency activities such as Resident Graduation, Retreat, Wellness Activities, and Orientation. Participates in resident and potential faculty interviews.
  • Under the supervision/guidance of the Attending Physician, performs initial and periodic physical examinations and behavioral assessments and explores patient’s interpretation of health needs. Works under the scope of Resident Physician and as an agent of the physician. Provides appropriate patient education. Provides continuity of care including discussing the completion of treatment plans and administration of medications and injections. Follows up on acute and chronic problems and significant abnormal tests. Supports the maintenance of adequate, concise, legible and up-to-date documentation of patient care. Provides treatment of patients as needed, including administering medications and/or vaccines and performing procedures. Works as an agent of the physician.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
