About the role

Job Summary:

Services to Students with Disabilities (SSD) is part of the Division of Student Affairs. The mission of the SSD office is to empower students with disabilities by fostering skills of self-advocacy, resourcefulness, and independence. The SSD office works collaboratively with the campus community to remove barriers and promote an enriched learning environment where students with disabilities can utilize their skills and pursue their academic and personal development goals.

SSD’s Alt. Media Graduate Student Assistant will work directly with the Accommodation Coordinator overseeing the Alt. Media accommodation and is responsible for assisting the SSD Office in building a fully accessible textbook library. Working in a fast-paced environment, the Alt. Media Graduate Student Assistant, will scan, review and edit books submitted by various sources ensuring that students with disabilities receive quality accessible course materials in a timely manner.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Using common scanning devices to translate paper-based publications into digital formats.
  • Converting digital books into various file formats using various computer-based tools.
  • Reviewing digital books for completeness, suitability, formatting, and spelling.
  • Using various web-based tools to process books for downloading and/or burning.
  • Proofreading submitted books with a word processor or text editor in order to bring text closer to the form in which the owner or publisher originally made the material available. Changes include, but are not limited to, correcting errors caused by the Optical Character Recognition process, or adding format information such as page breaks and headings.
  • Adding textual descriptions of graphics contained in books.
  • Updating and maintaining the Alternative Formats Editing Process manual
  • Assisting in troubleshooting issues with formats provided to students, this may include assisting with tutorials on Kurzweil and AIM.
  • Attend scheduled trainings and participate in office meetings/planned operations.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.

Required Qualifications

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card
  • Student must have and maintain a valid California Driver's License. (Operating the SSD golf carts and van is a requirement of this position.)

Special Conditions

  • Ability to work a minimum of 10 hours per week
  • Must be able to operate a golf cart and wheelchair accessible van.

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.50 - $17.50 per hour.

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

Position Information:

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm).

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).
