Job Overview

Responsible for year-round, 24/7 Georgetown University Law Center, Capital Campus (Downtown), and Georgetown University law enforcement, security, and safety organization, operation, supervision, and administration in accordance with the Director Campus Security/Safety initiatives, programs, and activities. The primary work hours are dayshift hours (7am-3pm) however, the incumbent may be required to work the evening (3pm-11pm) or midnight (11pm-7am) or other unusual hours designated by the Director Campus Security/Safety. This is a uniform wearing position as required by the District of Columbia Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection.

The Deputy Chief of Police reports directly to the Director Campus Security/Safety and is a Full Time, Exempt and Emergency Employee. Reporting to the Deputy Chief are subordinate staff members to include Police Captain(s), Lieutenant(s), Sergeants, and classifications of officers who are bargaining unit members: Security Officers, Communications Specialists (civilian), Special Campus/University Police Officers, Communications Officers, Master Patrol Officers, Investigators and non-bargaining civilian professional staff. Also reporting are student guards and indirectly, external contract security. The Deputy Chief of Police requires a forward-thinking professional with a collaborative leadership style that contributes to campus safety. Requires visibility, engagement, and collaboration with Law Center, Capital Campus, and University faculty, staff, and students. Responsible for year-round, 24/7 Georgetown University Law Center, Capital Campus (Downtown), and Georgetown University law enforcement, security, and safety organization, operation, supervision, and administration in accordance with the Director Campus Security/Safety initiatives, programs, and activities. Activities may include and not limited to:

  • Directs the overall Police Program through the identification of priorities and needs utilizing work schedules, assigning subordinate duties, conducting follow-up inspections of subordinate task performance, conducting training programs, conducting disciplinary hearing, and overseeing the general operation of safety, security and law enforcement activities.
  • Special event security, program performance plans, community relations with community groups to include local and federal law enforcement.
  • Develops plans, programs, and procedures for all administrative and operational activities to include security policies, risk-based campus security programs, and operational strategies and tactics.
  • Helps to support Police Accreditation, CLERY Act, FERPA, Title IX, Threat Assessment, and other higher education operational/administrative processes for the Law Center, Capital Campus, and University.
  • Performs full range of executive, mid-level, and supervisory duties to include strategic thinking, innovative initiatives, recruiting, hiring, performance evaluation, awarding, promoting, monitoring subordinate performance, disciplining employees (including participation in grievance hearings), collective bargaining negotiations, annual budget review, and reviewing statistics for operational and administrative impact and decision making.
  • Attendance to professional development opportunities as required by the Director Campus Security/Safety.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree, at a minimum, for consideration (master’s Degree preferred) from an accredited college/university.
  • Non-degree candidates possessing the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience (law enforcement, military, or campus-based policing in higher education) with ten (10) years at a senior or executive level may be reviewed.
  • At least ten to fifteen, preferably twenty, years of experience, in progressively responsible positions in a large-scale law enforcement agency, military command and/or higher education command at a major university, including years serving in a mid-level, senior and/or executive leadership role.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Honest, integrity based, and ethical policing is required. A strong work ethic, emotional maturity, and ability to lead in a diverse campus setting is required.
