About the role

Description

St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting résumés for the position of Director of the Writing and Speaking Center, reporting to the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs.  The director is responsible for the activities and operations of The Writing and Speaking Center (WSC), a key curricular and co-curricular resource for the students and faculty. The director provides pedagogical leadership and expertise as it relates to supporting the College’s overall learning goals in the areas of written and spoken communication and plays an active role in shaping the professional learning offered to faculty to support student learning in those two specific areas of the curriculum. The director of the WSC will regularly collaborate with the chair of the LEAD Seminar program and faculty throughout campus in the development and/or implementation of assignments which heavily emphasize oral and/or written communication skills within their courses. In addition, the director provides strategic and administrative leadership for the WSC, with a particular focus on the peer tutoring program and the tutorials it offers to SMCM students. The director is responsible for recruiting and preparing each cohort of tutors for the Center. The director must have strong professional and administrative skills, be well organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently with minimal supervision, and able to handle confidential issues.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required either in education/pedagogy or English/composition; PhD or EdD preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in academic administration, preferably with attention to systems and processes supporting student skill development and/or peer tutoring.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills are a must.
  • Must have working knowledge of peer tutoring theory and practice; strong organizational and managerial skills; and the ability to work with a diverse group of students and faculty across a range of disciplines.
  • Experience with a range of assessment practices and data analysis is a plus.

Any combination of acceptable education and experience, which has provided the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill the requirements of this position, may be considered.

The salary is $90,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
