The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Product Developer – Vehicle Integrity in 3M’s Automotive Aftermarket Laboratory, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. The successful candidate will have a strong chemistry aptitude and passion for developing solutions that enable repair of vehicles.
Here, you will make an impact by:
- Support the technical development of products used in the vehicle repair process such as fillers, adhesives, sealants, and coatings.
- Collaborating with cross functional teams to identify and deliver New Product Introduction (NPI) projects of significant value
- Developing a strong understanding of customer needs by learning best practices, visiting body shops, and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Driving successful product scale-up from laboratory to manufacturing and assisting with troubleshooting process and product quality issues
- Invent new product solutions that meet challenging expectations of automotive manufacturers and repair professionals
- Develop and perform test methods to evaluate new product concepts and changes to existing products
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Bachelors degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start).
- Six (6) months experience working with adhesives, coatings, or similar products in a private, public, government or military environment.
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Master’s or PhD degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, material engineering, polymer science, or a related field
- Familiarity with epoxy, polyurethane, acrylate, and similar chemistries.
- Demonstrated ability to design experiments, statistically analyze test results, make data-driven decisions, and deliver project results.
- Polymer / adhesive characterization experience using DSC, DMA, and rheology techniques
- Adhesive performance characterization such as universal tensile test equipment
- Strong understanding of chemical processing methods and pilot scale batch mixing.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and demonstration skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

Maplewood, MN
This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN.
Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).
