Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Adult Oncology Social Work Training Program
The Dana-Farber Social Work Division is deeply committed to the education of the next generation of social workers, and the Dana-Farber Adult Oncology Social Work Training Program provides an opportunity for second-year MSW students to work with patients and families in the ambulatory, oncology, and benign hematology setting and to develop specialized knowledge and skills in assessing and addressing the psychosocial impact of cancer and serious illness on a person’s life. Interns will have a clinical supervisor who will guide their training and assign cases.

The mission of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is to provide expert, compassionate care to children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases. An affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a Comprehensive Cancer Center designated by the National Cancer Institute, Dana-Farber also provides training for new generations of physicians, scientists, and other disciplines, designs programs that promote public health particularly among high-risk and underserved populations, and disseminates innovative patient therapies and scientific discoveries to target communities across the US and throughout the world.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Social Work Division

The Dana-Farber Social Work Division is part of the Department of Supportive Oncology. Dana-Farber social workers are licensed clinicians, assigned to treatment centers (e.g., breast, sarcoma, or GI cancers) or regional campus locations, who provide ambulatory care to patients and families and collaborate closely with other providers, including colleagues in psychiatry, psychology, and palliative care.

Interns will have a clinical supervisor who will guide their training and assign cases.

Intern activities include:

conducting psychosocial assessments
counseling individuals, couples, and/or families
providing crisis intervention,
addressing safety concerns (e.g., domestic violence, elder abuse/neglect, self-harm risk),
facilitating family meetings,
participating in health care team meetings
participating in interdisciplinary rounds and other care related forums or meetings
connecting with community agencies and Dana-Farber resources in support of patient and family needs (often in collaboration w/other staff and/or the health care team)
attending additional training activities at Dana-Farber (didactic seminars, case presentations, grand rounds, in-service workshops)
